Rollins Shuts Out Embry-Riddle in Series Opener

Tars get another solid pitching performance to extend their win streak to four

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 18, 2022) – The Rollins baseball team earned a 1-0 victory on Friday night over Embry-Riddle, the second consecutive Friday night 1-0 victory for the Tars. The win moves Rollins to 5-2 on the season, 1-0 in conference play, while the Eagles drop to 1-6 overall, 0-1 in SSC games.

Joey Rubin finished 2-for-4 with a run scored while Adams Torres was 0-for-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base. Jeslyn Whitehead went 2-for-4 and Andres Antonini was 2-for-3.

Jaylyn Whitehead (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings, allowing just four hits and a walk while striking out eight. Austin Long earned his first save of the year, tossing the final three innings, surrendering three hits and two walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Daniel Trillo went 2-for-3 and Andrew Martinez finished 1-for-4 with a double for Embry-Riddle. Garrett Goodall (0-2) took the loss, allowing a run on five hits in six innings, striking out four.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
  • Rubin led off with a single and Chase Achuff followed with a single on a hit-and-run play, allowing Rubin to easily get to third base.
  • Torres hit into 6-4-3 double play which prevented him from getting the run batted in, but his at-bat allowed Rubin to cross the plate with what turned out to be the only run of the game.
Fifth Inning
  • The Eagles threatened in the fifth, using two singles and a walk to load the bases with one out.
  • Whitehead got Max Law to hit a soft line drive right to Achuff at shortstop, who was easily able to win the race to second base to double off the runner at second, ending the inning.
Ninth Inning
  • Embry-Riddle came close to tying it in the ninth as well, starting with an infield single from Garrett Bogart with one out.
  • Alex Britton followed with a low liner to left that got lost in the lights and rolled to the warning track. Bogart tried to score on the play, but Cameron Meehan backed up the play and made a strong throw to Achuff, who delivered a great relay throw to Herron behind the plate, who made the tag on Bogart to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard.
  • Long got the next batter to strike out to end the game.
