WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 11, 2022) - Four Tars combined to toss a four-hit shutout and
Chase Achuff delivered a key two-out RBI single to lead the Rollins baseball team to a 1-0 victory in the first game of a three-game series against No. 10 West Florida. The win evens the Tars season record at 2-2, while the Argonauts fall to an identical 2-2.
Chase Achuff was 2-for-4 with the game's only RBI, while
Andres Antonini finished 2-for-2 with a walk and the lone run scored.
Jaylyn Whitehead (1-0) picked up the win, going the first six innings, allowing just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Austin Long and
Michael Cullen each pitched scoreless frames in relief, while Achuff came in from shortstop to pitch a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts, earning his first save.
Trent Jeffcoat was 2-for-4 with a stolen base for the Argonauts, while Alden Davis went 1-for-2 with two walks.
Josh Pahlad (0-2) took the tough-luck loss, allowing one run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work. Jacob Estes pitched a hitless 2.2 innings of relief, giving up just two walks while striking out one.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Third Inning
- Antonini led off the bottom of the third with a base hit.
- He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Timothy Mira and took third on a groundout by Nick Santucci.
- Achuff came up with a big two-out single to score Antonini, putting the Tars up 1-0.
Sixth Inning
- Trent Jeffcoat reached on a bunt single with one out.
- With two outs, Jeffcoat took second on a wild pitch.
- Davis then drew a walk, while Jeffcoat stole third, putting runners at the corners with two outs.
- Jaylyn Whitehead was able to strike out Jadon Fryman to strand both runners, preserving the 1-0 lead.
Ninth Inning
- Achuff moved from shortstop to the pitcher's mound for the ninth inning.
- The Argonauts got a one-out baserunner thanks to an error, and Mark Townsend followed with a single to center, putting runners on first and second with one out.
- Achuff induced a ground ball to third that resulted in a fielder's choice at second base, setting up runners on first and third with two outs.
- Achuff nailed down the save, striking out Dean Hotz for the final out.
