Tars Clinch Series with Wild Extra-Inning Win Over No. West Florida

Rollins walks it off in the 10th against the 10th-ranked Argonauts

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 12, 2022) - After nine innings on Saturday, neither team could push across a run. Then Rollins and No. 10 West Florida combined for five runs in the tenth, with the Tars walking off with a 3-2 win. The victory improves Rollins' season mark to 3-2, while the Argonauts drop to 2-3.

Jared Herron was 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI, while Jeslyn Whitehead went 1-for-5 with a run and an RBI. Joey Rubin finished 2-for-4 with a double and Parker Smith was 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Nick Santucci also doubled, going 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

Justin Alintof started for the Tars, going six scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a walk while striking out four. Tate Stone-Frisina (1-1) got the win in relief pitching the final three innings, allowing two runs on two hits, walking two and striking out three.

Chris Johnson went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Argonauts, while Alden Davis was 1-for-3 with a walk. Trent Jeffcoat finished 1-for-4 with a stolen base, and Cullan O'Shea was 0-for-3 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch, a stolen base, and a run scored.

Salvatore Ferro started and threw six scoreless innings for the Argonauts, giving up five hits and a walk while striking out one. Brendan Case (0-1) took the loss, surrendering all three runs on two hits and a walk in 0.2 innings of work.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Eighth Inning
  • UWF threatened in the top of the eighth, when Jeffcoat led off with a single and promptly stole second.
  • O'Shea was then hit by a pitch, putting two on with nobody out.
  • Stone-Frisina was able to get the next three batters in order, keeping the shutout intact.
Ninth Inning
  • Rollins was poised to push a run across in the ninth to win it after Smith doubled to lead off the inning.
  • Three batters later, Herron delivered what looked to possibly be the game-winning single through the left side of the infield, but Smith was thrown out at the plate to keep the game scoreless.
Tenth Inning
  • Johnson opened the 10th with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt.
  • The Tars then intentionally walked O'Shea, who wasted little time stealing second.
  • Rollins then chose to intentionally walk Davis to load the bases with one out.
  • Mark Townsend was up next, and Tate-Frisina threw a pitch that Townsend took a check-swing at; the pitch also appeared to possibly glance off his leg, deflecting past Herron to the backstop. The Tars' battery thought they had picked up a key strikeout, but the umpire simply took off his mask and backed out of the way of a potential play at the plate. Johnson came streaking home with the game's first run, and O'Shea followed close behind, scoring from second on the play as a result of the confusion as to what the call was.
  • Following a lengthy discussion, the runs stood and Townsend remained at the plate with a 2-2 count. Two pitches later, Tate-Frisina struck him out looking; he then induced a grounder to end the inning, limiting the damage to two runs.

  • Santucci led off the bottom the 10th by drawing a five-pitch walk.
  • Two batters later, Adams Torres singled to right, moving Santucci to third.
  • Jeslyn Whitehead then grounded to third, but the Argonauts could only get the out at second as Santucci crossed the plate to make it a 2-1 game.
  • Smith followed with a soft grounder to second base, but the first baseman tried to field the ball, vacating the base, which allowed Smith to easily win the race to first base.
  • Rubin was hit by the very next pitch, putting a Tar at each base with two outs.
  • After West Florida brought in a new pitcher, Chase Wilkerson, Ryan Coleman battled him hard and eventually earned himself a nine-pitch walk that plated Whitehead with the tying run.
  • Herron then stepped up and drilled an 0-1 pitch to the warning track in left-center, clearing the heads of the outfielders and landing for a walk-off single that scored Smith with the game-winning run.
