Tritons Slip Past Tars

Eckerd defeated Rollins on Thursday afternoon

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (December 29, 2022) - The Rollins Tars fell in a SSC matchup on Thursday afternoon to the #11 nationally-ranked Eckerd Tritons, 83-45. The loss moves Rollins to 5-6 )0-4 SSC), while Eckerd stands at 10-2 (5-0 SSC).

Eckerd was hot out of the gate, scoring ten points before the Tars found their way on to the scoreboard on an Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez layup. Unfortunately, Rollins would only manage two more made shots in the quarter, and found themselves in a 23-6 hole after one.

The second period saw Rollins up their scoring to 14 points, but Eckerd improved their number as well, dropping 24. A bight spot for the Tars in the second was their long-distance shooting. Emily Dogbatse, Erin Leigh, Maisie Evison, and Emily McIntosh all connected on three-pointers for the Tars. Despite their 57% shooting effort from three, Rollins was doomed by 8-29 shooting overall and ten turnovers, leading to a 47-20 halftime score.

Rollins showed heart in the third quarter, outscoring the Tritons 19-18. Irizarry-Perez scored five points, including a three, and also grabbed three rebounds. Leight matched her with five more points of her own on 2-3 shooting. Claire Erickson chipped in a trio of free throws as well in the third.

The Tritons put a stamp on the game in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tars 18-6. Rollins just couldn't seem to find the hoop as they shot 3-19 to end the game.

Leigh led the offense with a season-high 12 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

Next up for Rollins is a home game against Florida Tech on Sunday, January 1st. Tip is scheduled for 2:00 pm.
