Sailfish Survive Tars

Palm Beach Atlantic defeated Rollins 65-59 on Wednesday evening

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (November 30, 2022) - It was a tight one in West Palm Beach between visiting Rollins and the home team Palm Beach Atlantic. In the end, a clutch bucket and a costly turnover gave the Sailfish a 65-59 win over the Tars. Rollins moves to 3-4 on the year, with an 0-2 start in SSC play.

After the Sailfish took an early lead, Rollins fought back and claimed a 9-7 advantage after a Lucy Leen triple around the seven minute mark. The next bucket for Rollins was another three, this time from Kymora Westerfield. A pair of buckets brought PBA back, and they eventually recaptured the lead with a minute to go. They would go into the first break up 21-18.

Rollins scored the first five points of the second thanks to another Leen three and a layup from Maria Atanassov-Tomas. The teams would then trade leads a number of times for the remainder of the quarter. The Tars got a big three from Aaliyah Irizarry-Perez, a pair of free throws from Erin Leigh, and a layup from Claire Erickson to stay in it. However, the Sailfish again ended the quarter in their favor, scoring the last seven points to take a 38-36 lead into half.

Rollins shot 12-33 (36%) from the floor in the first half, but they did knock down six triples.

Neither team was particularly impressive in the third quarter, as they each managed ten points. Grace Alfieri was responsible for half of the Tars' ten with a three and a layup. The score was 48-46 after three.

With 3:44 to go, the Sailfish took a five point lead. Emily Dogbatse came through huge for the Tars with makes on back-to-back possessions to tie things up at 56 all. The teams would tie again at 57, and then once more at 59 following an Irizarry layup with 72 seconds to play.

On the ensuing Sailfish possession, Jillian Schenk splashed a wide open 20-footer to take a two-point lead. After a timeout, Rollins missed a shot in traffic, followed by an unfortunate turnover on a dribble drive that led to four free throws for Palm Beach Atlantic. They would hold on for the 65-59 win.

Leen led the Tars offense with 14 points while adding four boards and two assists. Nine different Tars scored in this one.

Next up is another SSC matchup, tis time in Miami Shores as Rollins heads to Barry on December 10.
