JACKSON, Tenn. (November 15, 2022) - The 2022 Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Men's Soccer All-South Region teams were announced on Tuesday. Honorees were voted on by the sports information directors of each school in the region.
The Rollins men's soccer team, in the midst of a run through the NCAA Tournament, had three players recognized for their standout seasons.
Leading the way was senior forward
Georgios Koliniatis, who led the Tars in both goals and assists this year. At the time of nomination, he had nine goals and six helpers. He has since added two goals to that total in the Tars' win over West Florida in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Among Koliniatis's nine goals, four turned out to be game winners, and countless others were of the highlight reel variety. He has pushed himself into the Top10 in school history in goals scored.
Jari Polm was voted one of the team captains, and was a leader on the pitch. While his stats only told the tale of one goal and two assists, his impact was felt beyond the box score each game. He played relentless defense in the midfield, often controlling the tempo and possession, while setting up the offensive attack.
Hayden Smethurst, a sophomore, played the most minutes (1,411) of any Tar outside of goalie
Maximillian Obermeier. He was a terrific on-ball defender, often breaking up opponent's sets. He had a keen sense of when to go on the attack as well, and found himself on multiple occasions the recipient of long passes, which he would then send into the box to his awaiting attackers. Smethurst scored once this year, and also added a pair of assists.
West Florida's Kainan Dos Sants was named the South Region Player of the Year. Thirteen different schools had a player named to the first or second team, with SSC rival Florida Tech leading the way with seven.
The Tars face Florida Tech at their place on Friday, November 18 at 3:00 pm in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The two teams played to a 2-2 draw earlier this season when the game was played in Winter Park.
