COLUMBIA, SC (November 12, 2022) - The Rollins Tars suffered their first loss of the year on Saturday, falling to the host Benedict University Tigers 76-49. Rollins now sits at 1-1 on the year, while Benedict earned their first win of the year and moved to 1-1 as well.
Rollins got on the board quick with a
Hutton Yenor jumper, followed by a three from
Kyle Marion. Unfortunately, the Tars went cold for the next six minutes, failing to score a point until
Matheus Silveira layup snapped the streak. Still, Rollins remained in the game, and actually reclaimed the lead on a
Cameron Corcoran triple to go up 10-7.
The Tigers got hot about half way through the period, as they went on separate runs of 6-0, 7-0, and 8-0 (twice). Rollins got two points from Yenor with 3:51 remaining, but failed to score again before the horn. They headed into the locker room down 36-19.
Benedict kept the pressure on in the second half, starting out on a 9-0 run to go up 45-19. Silveria put the Tars on the board for the first time in the second half around the 15-minute mark. Unfortunately, the damage had already been done. Yenor and Potter had a solid stretch halfway through when they each hit a pair of threes, but the Tars' defense couldn't make enough stops to allow the offense to come back. By the end of the game, Benedict held on for a 76-49 win.
There was a lid on the hoop all night long for Rollins as they only managed to shoot 15-56 from the floor (26.8%). Benedict countered with 26-60 (43.3%), including 12-35 from three.
Next up for Rollins is the SSC conference opener against Embry-Riddle. The game will be played in Winter Park on Saturday, November 19 with a scheduled 4:00 PM tip.
