ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Oct. 8, 2022) – The Rollins sailing team finished 11th at the Eckerd Trophy on Saturday. The Tars earned four top-ten finishes throughout the day's 10 races at the Doyle Sailing Center.
The weather was fantastic with sunshine and temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s, with no hint that a major hurricane had passed through the state just a week prior. The Tars hadn't been able to practice during the week, as the water levels in Lake Virginia became so high as a result of Hurricane Ian that it was overflowing its banks.
The Eckerd Trophy is the last of the SAISA Fall Season points events, which are the events in which SAISA members can earn points that would qualify them for the conference championship regatta. Since the Fall 2018 season, the Tars have had a streak going of qualifying for the conference championship. Coming into the races at Eckerd, Rollins had not qualified for the championship, and with the aftermath of the hurricane preventing practice sessions, the Tars had their backs against the wall. But Rollins sailors
Carly Orhan,
Angelina Khourisader,
Margaret Burnham, and
Zi Burns came through.
Rollins' A boat posted the best results of the day in the 3A race, placing fifth, while also grabbing a sixth-place finish in the 2A and 4A races. The B boat took eighth in the 2B race for its highest finish of the day.
Overall, the Tars finished 11th with the A boat scoring 36 points and the B boat accounting for 65 points for a team total of 101 points. Miami won the regatta with 20 points, followed by USF's third team (29 points), Jacksonville's first (46) and second (51) teams, and Eckerd's second team (56) rounding out the top five.
With the results at the Eckerd Trophy, the Tars are ranked 15th in the SAISA, which qualifies them for the conference championship regattas that will be held on Lake Virginia in just a few weeks.

The Tars will head to Daytona Beach to take part in the SAISA Fall 2V2 Team Race hosted by Embry-Riddle next Saturday, Oct. 15.
