Tars Fall in Five to Lions

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Oct. 18, 2022) – The Rollins volleyball team dropped a close one to Saint Leo on Tuesday night, falling 3-2 (22-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 15-11) to the visiting Lions. The loss drops the Tars to 7-15 overall and 2-9 in conference, while Saint Leo improves to 9-12 overall, 2-8 in SSC play.
 
Lana Gerard led all players with 16 kills and added seven digs, while Makayla Moran chipped in with 14 kills and six bocks (one solo). Tess Margio added seven kills and six blocks and Emma Begley had eight kills and five blocks. Milla Sherman had a team-leading 11 digs and Natalie Horsley racked up a match-high 47 assists to go along with eight digs and three service aces.
 
Ally-Reese Williams led the Lions with 15 kills while grabbing nine digs, and Niamh Davies added 12 kills while hitting a match-best .529. Jeanette Henderson had a match-best 18 digs and Skyler Singler posted a team-leading 42 assists to go along with four blocks.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
Set One
  • The Tars used a 4-0 run in the middle of set one to pull out to 16-13 lead, their biggest lead up to that point.
  • Shortly after Saint Leo battled back to tie it at 17, Rollins scored three straight to take a 21-18 lead.
  • SLU got back within a point at 22-21, but the Tars closed out the set winning three of the final four points to take it, 25-22.
Set Two
  • Set two saw Saint Leo rattle off five points in a row to go up 12-8, then use a 3-0 spurt to extend the lead to 16-11.
  • Another 3-0 burst for the Lions made it 23-17, and they held on for a 25-20 win to tie the match at a set apiece.
Set Three
  • The Tars broke open the third set with a 6-0 run to turn a one-point lead into a commanding 19-12 advantage.
  • The Lions responded late, going on a 7-1 run to make things interesting, cutting the deficit to just one at 23-22.
  • A ball-handling error followed by a kill from Gerard took care of the final two points, giving Rollins a 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Set Four
  • The Tars jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the fourth, but SLU got four straight kills from Elizabeth Sandoval to go up 5-4.
  • Rollins quickly regained the lead with three straight points, but an 8-2 rally put the visitors in front, 13-9.
  • A 5-1 spurt increased the Lion lead to 20-14, and they would hold on for a 25-18 win to tie the match at 2-2.
Set Five
  • Saint Leo got off to a fast start in the fifth, running out to a 7-2 lead.
  • Rollins tried to keep it close, but couldn't ever get closer than three points as the Lions won the fifth set, 15-11, to clinch the match.

The Tars will open their final three-match road trip of the season on Friday, Oct. 21, with a 7 p.m. contest at Palm Beach Atlantic.
