DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (January 26, 2022) – The Rollins men's basketball team extended its winning streak to four on Wednesday with an 89-82 victory at No. 23 Embry-Riddle. With the win, Rollins moves to 11-9 overall and 6-6 in league play, while ERAU drops to 15-5, 8-3 against SSC opponents.
Brooks Cluxton recorded his eighth double-double of the season and fifth in a row, scoring a game-high 25 points on 9-of-12 shooting and grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and six assists.
Hutton Yenor poured in 22 points, going 7-of-13 from the field with five boards and four assists, while
Kyle Marion tallied 20 points on 8-of-12 shooting.
Dayton Gumm also reached double-figures with 11 points and added six rebounds and four assists.
Romeo Crouch scored a game-high 21 points for the Eagles and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds while dishing out a team-leading five assists. Malcolm Whitlow scored 14 points and also handed out five assists, while Elijah Jenkins totaled 12 points and five assists.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
- Marion scored on the game's first possession, which sparked a 6-0 run for Rollins to open the game.
- Embry-Riddle drew even at 21 with 8:51 to go in the first half after a quick 5-0 burst.
- The Eagles took their first lead of the contest a couple minutes later, going up 26-23.
- The Tars wasted little time as Cluxton made layups on back-to-back possessions to put Rollins back in front, 27-26, with 5:25 to go.
- An 8-2 run, which consisted of two threes and a two made by Marion, pushed the Rollins lead to 39-31.
- ERAU got two late baskets to trim it to 39-35 at the break.
Second Half
- Embry-Riddle made a three to open the second half, cutting the deficit to a point (39-38).
- Rollins quickly rebuilt the lead to six (44-38) and pushed it to eight (51-43) with 15:44 to play.
- ERAU chipped away, pulling within four (57-53) with 11:55 to go, but the Tars responded with a 7-0 spurt to take their biggest lead of the game at 64-53 with 10:50 left.
- The back-and-forth continued, with the Eagles scoring the next nine points to make it 64-62 with 9:10 on the clock.
- That would prove to be the closest the game would be for the remainder of the contest, as Rollins extended its advantage to nine (79-70) with 5:31 left in the game.
- With 1:02 to go, Embry-Riddle reduced the margin to four (83-79), but the Tars connected on six straight free throws in the closing 30 seconds, securing the 89-82 victory.
