Short Handed Tars Run Out of Gas Against Lynn

With a shallow bench, the Tars could not keep up with the Lynn Fighting Knights late, falling 81-60

WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 2, 2022) – With a shallow bench, the Tars could not keep up with the Lynn Fighting Knights late, falling 81-60 inside of Warden Arena.  Rollins drops to 7-7 overall, and 2-4 in the Sunshine State Conference.  Lynn improves to 8-3, and 2-3 in conference action.

Kyle Marion led all scorers with a career high 35 points, going 12-24 from the field and 6-10 from long range.  The guard also pulled in a team high six rebounds, and swiped the ball away from Lynn four times.  Cody Potter added eight points and four boards, while Will Erickson chipped in seven points.

Christian Peevy tallied 31 points and 12 rebounds, going 9-11 from the free throw line.  Brandon Bornelus and Alex Doane each tallied 14 points, with Doane's contribution coming off the bench.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • Kyle Marion scored seven of the Tars' first eight points, as Rollins jumped out to an 8-4 lead over the first four minutes.
  • Lynn would go on a 15-3 run over the next six minutes, taking a 19-11 lead.
  • Marion cut the deficit back down to five with a three pointer.
  • The Fighting Knights would reel off the next 10 points of the game, before Will Erickson hit a three pointer to stop the run.
  • Lynn responded with another scoring spree, taking a 19 point lead. But the Tars got a free throw from Tyler Woods and a pair of shots from the charity stripe by Marion to head into the break trailing by only 16, at 40-24.
Second Quarter
  • The Tars slowly cut into the deficit to open the second half.  Rollins registered the first five points of the period with an Erickson jump shot and a Marion triple.
  • Back-to-back threes from Marion and Cody Potter pulled the Tars within single digits, at 47-39, at the 15 minute mark.
  • A Potter layup with 11:44 on the clock brought the Tars within seven, but that was as close as the Tars could get.
  • Rollins small bench began to show down the stretch, as the Fighting Knights pulled away.  Lynn grew their lead to 24 with 1:22 on the clock.
  • Free throws from Brookes Kahlert hit a trio of free throws in the final minute to make the score 81-60 as the clock hit zeroes.
