WINTER PARK, Fla. (January 19, 2022) – The Rollins women's basketball team dug an early hole on Wednesday night, trailing 25-10 after one quarter and 53-20 at halftime. The Tars had a solid third quarter, outscoring the Tritons 23-12, but No. 21 Eckerd came away with an 80-55 victory. With the loss the Tars fall to 4-11 overall and 1-9 in conference play, while the Tritons improve to 11-1, 7-1 in SSC contests.
Niya Pluviose led Rollins with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc, while
Yoke Tassent chipped in with six points and a game-high eight rebounds.
Grace Alfieri added seven points and two steals off the bench.
The Tritons were led by Hannah Wentworth's 17 points on 5-of-6 shooting (3-of-4 from distance) off the bench. Macie Knapp added 14 points and a game-high eight boards, also off the bench, while Lauryn Vieira (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Sofia Persson (12 points) also reached double-figures in scoring.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Quarter
- Pluviose scored the first five points for Rollins, giving the Tars a 5-3 lead two minutes into the game.
- Eckerd went on a 12-0 run over the next 4:26 to take a 15-5 lead.
- The Tritons continued to build on their advantage, pulling ahead 25-10 after the first ten minutes.
Second Quarter
- Eckerd connected on 10 of its 15 field goal attempts in the second quarter, including going 7-for-11 from three-point range.
- The Tritons pushed their lead to 22 points (37-15) just past the halfway mark of the quarter, and built it to 33 (53-20) just before halftime.
Third Quarter
- Rollins had its best quarter of the game in the third, making eight field goals while holding Eckerd to just four.
- The Tars went on a 9-0 run, sparked by back-to-back threes from Pluviose, to cut the deficit to 55-31 with 4:56 to play in the period.
- A triple from Tassent brought Rollins within 20 at 58-38 with 2:40 on the clock.
- Eckerd scored seven straight points after that before the Tars answered with five points late in the quarter to make it 65-43 going to the fourth.
Fourth Quarter
- Eckerd maintained a comfortable lead throughout the final 10 minutes, increasing the margin back to 30 (80-50) with just over a minute to play.
- Isabella Prada scored on a layup and a three in the closing seconds to account for the 80-55 final score.
