Tars and Patriots Play to a Draw

Rollins finishes their season opening road trip at 1-0-1 overall

FLORENCE, S.C. (September 6, 2021) – The Tars and the Francis Marion Patriots played for a full 110 minutes, but could not separate themselves, finishing their Labor Day contest tied at 1-1.  Rollins finishes their season opening road trip at 1-0-1 overall.  The Patriots, who received votes in the first United Soccer Coaches National Poll, are still looking for their first victory, and sit with a 0-1-1 record.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • The Tars and Patriots played the first half evenly, with Rollins taking four shots while Francis Marion fired six.
  • The Tars got on the board first, coming off a set piece.  In the 26th minute, William Centeno lofted the ball to the back post where Georgios Koliniatis got his head to the ball and directed it beyond the Patriots' keeper.
  • The Patriots would equalize quickly, finding the back of the net just two minutes later.  Sam Pollard collected a loose ball outside the box and sent a cross back into the six yard box.  Nick Huenig got his head to the ball and sent it back across the goal, past a diving Maximillian Obermeier and into the back of the net.
Second Half
  • The second 45 minutes, played similar to the first, with both teams trading punches, but clean looks at the cage were limited.
  • Each team managed three shots.  Rollins forced one save, while Francis Marion put a pair of shots on target.
Overtime
  • Neither team could grab a winner in the extra time.
  • Maximillian Obermeier made a pair of saves in the final 20 minutes, finishing the game with seven stops.
  • The Patriots picked up eight fouls and three cards in the overtime period, often breaking up Rollins attacking threats before they could materialize.
