COLUMBUS, Ga. (September 3, 2021) – The Tars fell to West Alabama in the opener of the 2021 campaign, and their first competitive soccer in 651 days, by a score of 1-0. Rollins falls to 0-1-0 with the early season defeat. The Tigers pick up the win in their first game, to start their slate 1-0-0.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
- The Tars dominated play in the first 45 minutes, controlling much of the possession, and limiting the Tigers to very few attacking opportunities. Rollins out-shot West Alabama 6-0 in the half.
- The Tars first golden chance came just after the halfway point. Chynna McGirt gathered perfectly place through ball and found herself alone with the goalkeeper, but a sprawling save from the Tiger netminder kept the game scoreless.
- Rollins earned a second brilliant chance just minutes later when freshman Briyah Drayton was fouled in box. Â Bailey Tran stepped up to take the spot kick, but fired the ball off the post.
Second Half
- The Tars continued to create the most dangerous chances for a majority of the second 45 minutes.
- The Tigers, against the run of play, captured the lead in the 85th minute. West Alabama broke down the left side and sent a cross low into the six-yard box. Rollins missed a chance to clear and the ball fell to Megan Ongteco, who put it in the back of the net for the Tigers.
- In the full 90 minutes Rollins out-shot West Alabama 14-3, put five shots on target while the Tigers' registered two, and earned seven corner kicks against just a pair for West Alabama.
COACH SAYS:
"It's a game of moments and West Alabama took advantage of their moment. The chances we created were plenty, but we did not find the back of the net before they did. It's early in the season, and we will evolve and compete to win on Sunday." - Rollins Head Women's Soccer Coach
Alicia Schuck
