Tars Save the Series on the Road

The No. 6 Tars were able save the series by winning both games on the road against the No. 23 Lions

WINTER PARK, FLA. (April 2, 2021) - Rollins softball traveled to Saint Leo for a top-25, Good Friday, doubleheader. The No. 6 Tars were able save the series by winning both games on the road against the No. 23 Lions, taking game one 3-0 and game two by a score of 3-1.  Rollins improves to 10-1 overall, and 8-1 in Sunshine State Conference action. Saint Leo falls to 13-6 overall and 10-5 in SSC play.

Game 1: Rollins 3, Saint Leo 0
Ashley Worrell led the Tars at the plate, going 2-4, with a double and two RBI.  Cynthia Whitty also slapped a double, and registered an RBI.  Ali Shenefield starred for Rollins tossing a complete game one-hitter, while fanning five Lions

Rollins looked to make a comeback after last night's loss against Saint Leo. The Tars took the lead against the Lions in the top of the third inning, 2-0. Raiven Bryant led off the frame reaching first base on an error by the shortstop. The Tars sent Bryant around the bases with a pair of sacrifices, before Chelsea Peace walked to first. Ashley Worrell came to the plate and put the ball into deep left field for a double, allowing Bryant and Peace to score the first runs of the game.

Rollins would extend the lead in the top of the fourth inning. Lindsay Gehring was hit by a pitch, putting the leadoff batter on base again for Rollins, Grace Germer would take Gehring's spot on the base paths, and steal second. Cynthia Whitty hit a shot out to right field for a double, pushing Germer across the plate for the Tars' third run. The trio of scores was more than enough for Shenefield.

The sophomore retired the Lions in order in each of the last three frames, including a pair of strikeouts in the seventh to secure the win.

Game 2: Rollins 3, Saint Leo 1
Raiven Bryant went 1-3 with an RBI, while Chelsea Peace drive home a run for the Tars' offense.  Taylor Waters went 2-3, including a double.  Ashley Worrell surrendered just one hit, and one run in a complete game performance.  The junior struck out 11 in her sixth win of the year.

Neither team could get their bats hot until late in the game. Saint Leo scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Pilon hit a double to left center driving home Hare for the score.

The Tars tallied a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to quickly take the lead away from the Lions. Lexi Moore walked, and advanced to third on a wild pitch and a pass ball. Troutman walked to put runners on the corners. Troutman attempted to swipe second, and forced an error by the Saint Leo catcher; the mistake moved Troutman to third and allowed Moore to advance home and tie the game at 1-1. Chelsea Peace then grounded out to shortstop driving Troutman across home plate, and making the score 2-1.

Back up to the plate in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Tars tallied an insurance run, padding their slim lead. Bryant singled up the middle, scoring Grace Germer for the third run of the game.

The Lions got the lead off runner on in the seventh, but Worrell got Avants to hit into double play.  The pinch hitter popped up to Bryant who tossed the ball to Troutman; the throw beat Bean to the bag to end the contest.
