WINTER PARK, FL (April 15, 2021)- The Tars took on Palm Beach Atlantic, in doubleheader action, to begin a Sunshine State Conference series. Rollins won the two games at Rollins Softball Stadium, 1-0 and 2-0. Rollins improved to 12-1 overall and 9-1 in SSC play. The Sailfish moved to 12-9, 10-6 against SSC competition.
Game 1: Rollins 1, Palm Beach Atlantic 0
The first game of the series was a nail-biter. For most of the game the pitchers controlled the diamond.
Chelsea Peace swung the only live bat throughout the contest. The catcher went 3-4 with a pair of doubles and a homerun, her fifth of the season.
Ashley Worrell was the star of the contest. The Rollins hurler tossed nine full innings of one-hit softball. The junior struck out eight as she moved to 7-1 on the year.
PBA pitcher Abbey Busby threw six strikeouts, allowing six hits and walking seven batters.
The first Palm Beach Atlantic batter of the game reached on chopped single to third base. After that Worrell retired the next 13 Sailfish to come to the plate. Dallas Watterson broke the streak in the fifth, reaching on an error. Worrell then ended the game by sitting down the final 13 Sailfish to enter the batter's box.
Rollins, however, could not crack the scoreboard either. The Tars had more opportunities, but left runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh. Both defenses were on point, and the Tars and Sailfish went into extra innings knotted at 0-0.
In the bottom of the ninth
Chelsea Peace hit a bomb to left field, scoring the only run of the game in walk-off fashion.
Game 2: Rollins 2, Palm Beach Atlantic 0
Tyler Jo Colby went 1-2 with a homerun at the plate for the Tars in game two.
Ashley Troutman also registered a 1-2 contest, and scored a run.
Ashley Worrell recorded an RBI.
Again, for Rollins, it was the effort in the circle that shined brightest.
Ali Shenefield tossed a complete game, allowing only two hits, while striking out 11 Sailfish, her highest strikeout total of the season so far.
Briana Rodriguez and Katherine Budnovich each went 1-3 to lead the Palm Beach Atlantic offense, while Shenefield's counterpart, Cambira Arturo, surrendered two earned runs on five hits.
The Tars manufactured an early run, taking a 1-0 lead in the first frame.
Ashley Troutman led off the game with a single then stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout.
Ashley Worrell then hit a sacrifice fly to push Troutman across home plate for the first run.
After Shenefield escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the third, Rollins doubled their lead in the bottom of the inning, tallying the final score of the contest.
Tyler Jo Colby hit a solo home run, her first homerun of the season.
Shenefield would not allow a hit after the third inning. The sophomore struck out a pair of batters in both the fourth and sixth frames. Rollins then turned a double play to end the contest in style. Sammy Perez line the ball to
Chelsea Peace at third, who fired the ball across the diamond to Colby, doubling up Hayley Haas, and securing the sweep for Rollins.
