LAKELAND, Fla. (March 27, 2021) - Playing their second match in as many days, the Rollins volleyball team fought hard, but ultimately came up short in their quest for their first win of the season, losing to the Florida Southern Mocs 3-0 on Saturday evening.
Both teams came out fighting in the first set, matching each other nearly point for point throughout. With Southern holding a 22-19 lead, the Tars were able to rip off five straight points and were on the brink of winning the set, going up 24-22. However, the Mocs rallied and put up three straight to take a 25-24 lead. After Rollins tied the game at 25 on an
Emma Begley kill, Southern was able to score the next two points to take the set. The Tars put up 11 kills in the set, one of their best totals of the year.
Set two saw Florida Southern take an early 6-2 lead, but the Tars were able to battle back to within one. At 8-7, Florida Southern then went on a seven-point run to take command of the set. Rollins made it interesting with a five-point run of their own to pull within three, but the Mocs held on to win 25-18.
Marlee Johnson led Rollins with three kills in the set.
Florida Southern was aggressive on the attack in set three, totaling 17 kills at the net. Neither team had a run of more than three points, but staying true to the theme of the day, Southern was able to maintain the lead throughout. By the end, the Mocs had won set three 25-20.
Candace Doxey and
Marlee Johnson each had eight kills to lead the Tars for the day.
Rebecca Kuehn checked in with 23 assists, and
Emma Begley had her best defensive effort of the year with seven block assists.
Next up for the Tars is a home match against Florida Tech on Tuesday March 30. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 pm
