BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 16, 2021) - The Rollins men's tennis team fell in their season opener at #10 Lynn, 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon.
Playing for the first time in 369 days, the men's team found themselves facing a top 10 opponent on the road. Lynn secured the first point of the day by taking home two of three doubles matches. On court two, Carlos Gomez and Joao Ferreira took down
Efe Comu and
Denis Golubev 6-3, while Diego Gonzalez and Giovanni Araujo made it past
Mikkel Baumann and
Freddy Danielson, 6-2. The silver lining from doubles was a court one victory for
Andrea Brignacca and
Charlie Putrino who squeaked past Luca Baptista and Jan Kirchhoff, 7-6.
In singles play, the Fighting Knights proved to be too much for the Tars. Gomez earned the second point of the day by defeating Brignacca 6-2, 6-0 on court two. On court three, Baumann fell at the hands of Baptista, 6-2, 6-1. Lynnthen clinched the day with a final out of position one when Ferreria outlasted Golubev 6-3, 6-4 in a hard-fought match. The Knight also took points in positions five and six.
The lone point from Rollins came from a herculean effort out of
Charlie Putrino on court four. The transfer from D-1 Davidson dropped the first set against Jan Kirchhoff, 6-7 before bouncing back with a 7-6 win of his own. In the third and final set, Putrino was able to gut out the win with a 10-7 final frame.
Rollins falls to 0-1 on the year while the Fighting Knights move to 2-0. Next up for Rollins will be their home opener against Embry-Riddle on Thursday, March 18 at 3 pm.
