Tars Drop Heartbreaker at #3 Lynn

Four singles matches taken to three sets

BOCA RATON, Fla. (March 15, 2021) - Rollins dropped a heartbreaker on Monday afternoon at Lynn, losing 6-1. However, the match was far closer than the final score would lead you to believe. Four of the six matches were taken to three sets, with the Fighting Knights able to take three of the four.

Rollins jumped out to an early advantage in this one in the battle for the doubles point. Alexandra Borg and Georgina Groth retained their perfect doubles record from position one by sweeping Eleonore Barrere and Federica Mordegan, 6-0. The next match to finish was out of doubles three where Polina Vlasova and Eve Wasil fell to Karyna Bihel and Barbora Cibakova. The third and final match earned the Knights the point when Eleonora Liga and Giorgia Pigato outlasted Kaitlynn Groves and Maria McKay, 6-3.

The Tars fought hard across the board in singles play, taking one of the top teams in the country to the edge. Lynn snagged two points out of positions five and six, meaning Rollins would have to win the final four games to take the overall match.

Polina Vlasova faced off against Pigato in position four, and fell behind 6-1. The freshman was able to bounce back, however, earning a 6-1 win of her own in the second set. Pigato prpoved to be too much in the final set, taking the point 6-1 again.

Groth continued her hot start to the year out of singles two. She was matched up against Barrere, and also fell behind early, losing 6-1. However, the German native was able to bounce back and take set two 6-3 before earning Rollins their first point of the season by sweeping the third set 6-0.

Groves took an early advantage in her first game, defeating Federica Mordegan 7-6 out of position three. Unfortunately Mordegan was able to recover and take the final two sets 6-1 and 6-2.

Position one was the final match to wrap up. again, Rollins was in a strong position from the jump as Borg swept the first game against Bihel, 6-0. Bihel tied things up with a 6-3 win in game two, setting the stage for a third and final showdown. It was a hard fought effort from both sides, with Bihel scraping by with a 7-6 win to earn the final point of the day.

The loss drops Rollins to 0-2 on the season after facing two of the top four ranked teams in the country. This was Lynn's first match of the season, and was the first time that they allowed an opposing team to score a point since 2019.

Up next for the Tars is the home opener on Wednesday, March 17 against Embry-Riddle. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 pm in Winter Park.
