MIAMI SHORES, FLA. (March 14, 2021)- The No. 7 Tars swept a doubleheader against the Barry Buccaneers on the road, 6-1 and 1-0, on Sunday evening. The Tars took all four games against the Bucs this week, starting their season 4-0, 3-0 in Sunshine State Conference play. Barry falls to 1-7 overall and 0-6 in conference action.
Game One: Rollins 6, Barry 1
Ashley Troutman got the Tars on the board first, singling to right field in the bottom of the third, scoring
Lexi Moore and
Jaden Walker. Troutman then came around the bases, scoring on a throwing error when
Ashley Worrell grounded to the shortstop. The Bucs stopped the bleeding though, escaping a bases loaded, no out, situation, and holding Rollins to just three runs.
The Bucs pulled one run back in the bottom of the fourth. Payton Germer lofted a sacrifice allowing Maggie Wheless to touch home plate, and cut the Tars' advantage to 3-1.
Rollins tallied a trio of insurance runs in the top of the seventh, capitalizing on a pair of Buc errors to seal the game. With one out the Tars loaded the bases with three consecutive singles, including a pair of bunts.
Chelsea Peace then slapped a ball to the shortstop, reaching on a fielder's choice, while a pair of Tars crossed the plate on a Barry throwing error. After a dropped fly ball that would have ended the frame,
Lindsay Gehring singled up the middle, scoring Peace, for the Tars' sixth run.
Ashley Worrell had another dominant day in the circle. She threw seven innings, tossed eight strikeouts, and only allowed two hits.
Game Two: Rollins 1, Barry 0
The Tars and Bucs were locked in a pitchers' duel in the series finale. The game did not see a hit until the fifth inning, and neither team could crack the scoreboard until the sixth. In the sixth, the Tars loaded the bases, chasing the Bucs' starter, Cassandra Lee.
Ashley Grimanelis then made her time at the plate count, slapping a clutch single up the middle, and driving
Chelsea Peace across the plate for the game winning run. The Bucs tallied all three of their hits in the final two innings, but did not push a runner past second base, as Rollins held on for the slim win.
Ali Shenefield won her second game of the season, collecting six strikeouts while allowing zero runs on three hits in another complete game effort.
