WINTER PARK, FLA. (March 12, 2021)- Despite not seeing the diamond in more than a calendar year, the nationally ranked Tars softball team looked ot be in midseason form as they swept a doubleheader against SSC rival Barry, winning 8-0 and 4-0 on Friday evening.
Game One: Rollins 8, Barry 0
Chelsea Peace put the Tars ahead early on, launching her first homerun of the season in the bottom of the first to give Rollins a 1-0 lead. They padded their lead in the bottom of the third with a team effort.
Cynthia Whitty led off the inning with a single, and moved to second on a one-out Peace base hit.
Ashley Worrell followed with an infield hit of her own to load the bases. That set the table for
Lindsay Gehring who was able to drive a pitch to the left field wall for a double, scoring two. Rollins then added two more in the inning on a sac fly from
Tyler Jo Colby and an RBI single from
Ashley Grimanelis to make the score 5-0. Worrell then rounded out the scoring with a three-run bomb in the fourth inning to make the final score of 8-0.
Worrell was also magnificent in the circle, tossing all five innings. She surrendered two hits (both singles) and did not allow a Barry runner past second base. She also tallied five strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Game Two: Rollins 4, Barry 0
The bats weren't as powerful in game two, but the Tars were able to take advantage of Barry starter Cassandra Lee with a keen eye at the plate. For the game, Rollins drew seven walks, and also benefited from four wild pitches.
The first run of the game came in the bottom of the first when
Ashley Grimanelis walked with the bases loaded. She was the fourth straight Tar to walk at that point. Unfortunately that would be the only run that Rollins could muster in the frame. In the second, newcomer
Lexi Moore reached on a single and was driven in by a
Chelsea Peace double to make the score 2-0. Rollins tacked on two more in the bottom of the third when
Cynthia Whitty's single drove in Colby and
Brycyn Smith.
From there, it was all
Ali Shenefield. The freshman hurler wrapped her day by scattering six hits across seven innings of shutout ball. She tallied eight strikeouts and walked one.
