Rollins just missed an upset in a physical battle, falling 1-0

WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 23, 2021) – Rollins just missed an upset in a physical battle against No. 9 Tampa, falling 1-0 under the lights at Barker Family Stadium.  The Tars fall to 7-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in Sunshine State Conference action.  The Spartans improve to 11-2-0 overall, and 8-1-0 against conference foes.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half
  • Both teams controlled parts of the first half, keeping the ball in their offensive zones, and pressuring the opposing defenses, but neither team would allow the breakthrough.
  • The Tars' best opportunity came early in the half when Jorge Lameiras broke down the right side and sent a low cross into the six yard box. Nazar Tsaruk got on the end of the pass and deflected the ball toward the goal, but the Tampa keeper scrambled to cover the ball on the goal line.
Second Half
  • The Spartans broke the deadlock in the 59th minute.  Juancho Fernandez scored on an Ornaldo Zeqiri assist, making the score 1-0.
  • Rollins continued to push for the equalizer, ultimately firing eight shots, three on target, and earning nine corners in the second 45 minutes, but Rollins could not convert any of their chances.
