Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Spartans Outlast Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 4, 2020) - The Rollins women's tennis team lost to UNC Greensboro 6-1 on Wednesday at the Bert Martin Tennis Complex. However, the match was much closer than the lopsided score suggests.

The Spartans claimed the first point of the match with a 3-0 sweep in doubles matchups. Erika Barquero and Ariana Chan shut out Alexandra Borg and Ola Durzynski 6-0 in the first position. Katie Groves and Georgina Groth fought hard against their flight two opponents Sophia Adams and Hanna Giddings, but fell by a score of 6-4. UNCg then finished the sweep when Tayah Cross and Briana Gomez outed Marie Debruyn and Paula Collado Cordon by a similar 6-4 score.

Rollins posted a 1-5 mark in singles matches:

  • Borg went down in straight sets against Barquero, 6-0, 6-0. It was the sixth win out of position one for Barquero this season.
  • The second flight was an impressive battle between Durzynski and Adams. The UNCG senior took the first set 6-2, but the senior Tar countered with an even better 6-1 win in set two. Moving to a third and final set, Adams was able to outlast Durzynski, scraping by with a 10-7 set win.
  • Katie Groves dropped her match against Briana Gomez by a score of 6-2, 6-0. It was the sixth singles win on the year for Gomez. Groves' record now stands at 3-4 on the year.
  • The Tars avoided the shutout thanks to freshman Georgina Groth. The German took down Giddings in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The win pushes Groth to 4-2 on the year, the best singles record on the Tars roster.
  • The fifth flight was another marathon. Marie Debruyn took an early lead, winning the first set 6-4 against Eugenia Camacho. However, Camacho returned the favor by winning the second set by the same score. Set three was a race to ten. Debruyn put up a fight, but eventually fell to the Costa Rican 10-8.
  • Paula Collado Cordon saw action in her second singles match of the year, losing 6-1, 6-0 to Ariana Chan.

Rollins now sits at 3-4 on the season. They will be right back at it on Thursday with a matchup against Lander University. Due to potential weather conditions in the late afternoon, the match has been moved up to start at noon. Stay tuned to RollinsSports.com for the latest updates.
