WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 1, 2020) – Four players scored in double figures Saturday as Rollins posted an 87-74 win over Tampa in Sunshine State Conference action.
Hutton Yenor led the way for the Tars (11-9, 5-7 SSC) with 20 points. The sophomore went 8-of-15 from the field and hit three from long range. Jakobi Bonner netted 18 and hauled in five rebounds while Connor Mckim posted 18 points and five assists. Brooks Cluxton added 12 points.
Tampa (6-15, 3-9 SSC) got 24 points from leading scorer Pat Bacon, whose night was bolstered by a 13-of-13 performance at the free throw line. Martin Lakovic added 17 points and five rebounds while Derrick Felder scored 15.
The win moved Rollins head coach Tom Klusman into a tie with UT's Richard Schmidt for the winningest coach in Sunshine State Conference history, both with 714 career victories.
The Tars forced an early Spartans timeout with Dayton Gumm connecting from deep and putting Rollins up 17-8, just four minutes in. Tampa came back and took a lead at 27-26 seven minutes later and went up 36-32 with 3:13 left in the half.
Rollins outscored UT 7-2 the rest of the frame and went into the locker room ahead 39-38.
The teams traded buckets in the second with no one leading by more than five until a Trevor Recio layup gave the Tars a 72-65 advantage with 6:29 left.
UT got as close as 72-69, but Rollins proved to be too much down the stretch and pulled away late. The Tars put it away with a five-point swing with three minutes to play as Bonner drilled a corner three-pointer, Kyle Marion stole the inbound pass and found Yenor for a thunderous dunk that brought the crowd to its feet.
Rollins shot a blistering 60 percent from the field and committed just six turnovers. UT hit 51 percent and outrebounded Rollins 27-24.
The Tars are at home on Wednesday, February 5 hosting sixth-ranked Nova Southern. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. Fans can catch the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSports.com and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.
