MONTGOMERY, Ala. (November 9, 2019) – Rollins jumped on top of Benedict with a big first half run and never looked back as the Tars beat the Tigers 60-50 Saturday in the South Region Tip off.
Dayton Gumm led the Tars (2-0) with 18 points, four rebounds and four assists. Hutton Yenor added 13 points while Trevor Recio tallied 12 points and eight rebounds.
Benedict (1-1) used 14 players on the day with both Deon Joyner and Romello Jones scoring 10 to pace the offense.
The Tars were outrebounded 36-29, but outshot the Tigers 39 percent to 37 percent and forced 20 turnovers.
Gumm hit from deep to tie the score 8-8 six minutes into the game, but the Tars offense got stuck in neutral and BC went on a 7-0 run.
Rollins responded in a big way, outscoring Benedict 23-4 over the next 11 minutes to take a 34-19 lead. The Tars later went into the locker room ahead 36-21.
Benedict got as close as 10 early in the second half until a Recio triple and Yenor layup gave the Tars some breathing room. Benedict would get no closer the rest of the way.
Rollins starts a six-game homestand on Wednesday, November 13, hosting Warner at 7 p.m. Fans can catch the action live on the Tars Sports Network at RollinsSportsLive.com and locally on 91.5 FM WPRK.
