Vitanza Pulls Upset on Senior Day, Mocs Still Down Tars

No. 19 Rollins – 3
No. 17 Florida Southern – 6 

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 6, 2018) – The No. 19 Tars fell behind early, and could not rally, falling to the No. 17 Florida Southern Mocs 6-3.  With the defeat Rollins moves to 12-7 overall and 5-3 in Sunshine State Conference play.  Florida Southern improves to 13-6 on the year and 6-3 in the SSC. 

The Mocs took all three double matches to gain the early advantage.  Sasha Nionova nd Selin Devrimci defeated Fabiana Vitanza and Alexandra Borg in a top-20 doubles match.  The No. 11 pair from Florida Southern bested the No. 17 duo from Rollins 8-6.  Teresa Kaiser and Katie Dyson fell in a tiebreaker in the second spot. 

The Tars took three of the six singles matches, but could not complete the comeback.  Dyson picked up the first win for Rollins, sailing to a second position win over Devrimci, 6-2, 6-1.  Marie Debruyn got the Tars back in the contest, making the score 3-2, with a victory in the sixth spot.  A pair of Mocs picked up the next wins, securing the victory for Florida Southern.  Fabiana Vitanza kept fighting, and pulled the upset on the top court.  The senior downed No. 69 Lorena Rionda, recovering from a second set defeat, to win in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 10-8.

Rollins will take to the road for the final time this campaign, as they head to Tampa to take on the No. 25 Spartans; first serve is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, at 3 p.m.
