Rollins Falls to Eighth-Ranked Spartans, 17-5, in SSC Setback

Cinque Earns Two Goals, Slocumb Two Assists

WINTER PARK, Fla. (April 11, 2018) – The Rollins men's lacrosse team suffered a setback against eighth-ranked University of Tampa on Wednesday evening, falling to the Spartans by a final score of 17-5 in Sunshine State Conference play.  The loss drops the Tars to a record of 5-6 overall and 2-3 in Sunshine State Conference action, while Tampa advances to a record of 11-3 overall and 3-1 against conference opponents.

Tampa ran out to a six goal lead and never looked back, handing the Tars just their second loss of the season at Cahall-Sandspur Field.

Freshman Joey Cinque led the way with two goals, while Blake Buell, Connor Ashton, and Jackson Colling scored one apiece.  Jeremy Slocumb led the team in assists with two on the night.  Evan Schimek led the team in ground balls with four, while Lucas Brush earned a team best three caused turnovers.  In goal, Andrew Hoemann played a total of 20:23 minutes in cage, unable to earn a save in his time between the posts as he allowed 10 goals.  Landon Salie closed out the final 39:37 minutes in goal, earning five saves, all in the fourth quarter.

The Spartans saw a game high four goals and three assists for seven points overall from Andrew Kew.  Matt Vetter chipped in a hat trick and two assists, while Bryan Wright scored three goals and dished out an assist for four points.  Luke Curran notched two goals of his own, while Jake Mosher McGraw, Spencer Eysaman, Shan Hanlon, and Hunter Van Horn scored one goal each.  The Spartans' ninth goal of the night was an own goal by Hoemann with 9:37 on the clock in the second quarter.  Mosher McGraw, Wright, Luke Posner and Kansai Garey also earned one assist apiece on the evening.  Both Luke Robideaux and Ross Dickerson picked up a team best four ground balls apiece, while Dickerson won 10-of-11 faceoff attempts.  Leading the team in caused turnovers were Robideaux and Kew, with two each.  In goal, B.J. Borowski played 45 minutes, earning seven saves while allowing four goals.  Bryan Karn closed out the final 15 minutes of play, earning one save while allowing one goal in the fourth quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• First Quarter:  The Spartans ran out to a six goal lead throughout the first 15 minutes, earning their advantage with 2:44 left in the quarter.  Kew assisted on the second and third goals, and scored the fourth and fifth to help the Spartans earn the advantage.  Cinque finally put the Tars on the board off of an assist by Slocumb with 1:33 left in the period, but a late goal by Vetter off of an assist by Kew with five seconds left in the quarter put the Tars in a six goal deficit after the first 15 minutes of play, 7-1.
• Second Quarter:  Tampa rolled through the second quarter much like the first, outscoring the Tars 5-1 to hold onto a 12-2 lead at halftime.
• Third Quarter:  The Spartans opened up the third quarter scoring two straight to take a 14-2 lead, but a goal by Ashton with 6:31 on the clock broke the run and pulled the Tars to within 11, 14-3.  Both teams traded blows once to close out the third stanza with Tampa holding onto a 15-4 lead.
• Fourth Quarter:  The Spartans closed out the game outscoring the Tars 2-1 in the final 15 minutes of play, securing the 17-5 victory.

NOTES:

• The Tars are currently 4-2 when playing at Cahall-Sandspur Field.
• When playing on the road, the Spartans are 5-1 on the season.  The last road game Tampa lost was on Wednesday, March 21, when UT lost to Florida Tech by a final score of 7-6.  The Spartans also dropped a neutral site contest to then eighth-ranked Colorado Mesa back on March 10 by a score of 10-9 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
• Tampa now owns the overall series against the Tars, 9-0.  The first time the two teams met in official competition was back on April 6, 2012, where UT earned a 15-8 victory over Rollins.
• The Tars received votes on both the USILA Division II Coaches Poll, as well as the NIKE/US Lacrosse Division II Top 20.
• The Spartans entered into Wednesday night's contest ranked eighth on the USILA Division II Coaches Poll, and checking at No. 11 on the NIKE/US Lacrosse Top 20. 
• Senior Andrew Hoemann currently sits sixth in program record books for career saves with 90.
• With 89 overall points, Greg Taicher currently sits fifth in program record books for career points. Taicher also sits fifth overall in career goals (62) and sixth in career assists (27).  He has also moved into program records for career ground balls with 63, good for 19^th.
• Jeremy Slocumb now sits in the program record books for overall points with 38, placing him 18^th all-time.  He also ranks in career assists, having earned 19 to place him in 12^th.  Slocumb has also earned 19 goals in his career, which places him in 20^th in career goals standings. 
• Connor Ashton has moved into 11^th in program record books for career points (59), 14^th for career goals (35), and has moved into seventh for career assists (24).
• Lucas Brush has earned 145 ground balls, and sits fourth in program record books for ground balls in a career.  The Dublin, Ohio native is also currently fifth in program record books for career caused turnovers with 56.  He currently sits 21 CT's behind program leader Scannapieco, who amassed 77 in his career.
• With 22 goals so far this season, freshman Joey Cinque has climbed into the program records for career goals, currently sitting 18^th.
• Evan Schimek currently sits seventh in program record books for career caused turnovers with 34. 
• Roy Hansen has earned 23 caused turnovers in his career, good for 13^th in program record books.
• Austin Jackson also appears in the program record books for caused turnovers, amassing 24 in his career to place him 11^th overall.
