WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 22, 2018) – The Tars responded to falling out of the national poll by upsetting No. 29 Southeastern Oklahoma, 5-4, Thursday evening. With the win Rollins improves to 6-8 on the year.
The Tars fell behind early, capturing just one doubles win. The third position duo of Cody Gubin and Frederick Danielson combined to earn the Tars' point with a 8-4 win.
Danielson led off the Tars singles play with a 6-1, 6-4 win in the sixth position, tying the overall score at 2-2. After the Savage Storm would pull another win away, Guillermo De Nicolas-Ruiz, named the No. 54 player by the ITA, came up with a three set singles victory over No. 52 Ondrej Nice, tying the tally one again at 3-3. After another Southeastern Oklahoma win the Tars top player, Nicolo De Fraia, who jumped to No. 29 in the national singles poll, captured a vital win over No. 49 Carlos Anez, 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-4. Cody Gubin then got to play hero for the Tars. The junior would bring home a third set tiebreaker to win the decisive marathon match, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 7-6 (5), on the fifth court.
The Tars return to SSC play tomorrow, Friday, February 23, when they host the No. 2 Barry Buccaneers to Bert Martin Tennis Complex at 2 p.m.
