SET-UP:
With a week to prepare for their next contest, the
Rollins men's lacrosse team welcomes Saint Leo to Barker Family
Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field on Saturday afternoon. The Tars
enter into their Sunshine State Conference clash with their longest
in-state rival with an overall record of 5-5 and 0-1 against SSC
opponents, and are coming off of a hard-fought contest that saw the
Tars fall to then No. 14 Tampa by a final score of 18-11 in their
SSC opener on Saturday, March 25.
Greg
Taicher led the team in goals on the night with a hat trick,
followed by Connor
Ashton, Justin
Diamond, and Eric
NeCamp with two apiece. Tommy
Keane and Dylan
Bassham netted one goal each. Taicher led the team in goals,
assists and overall points as he added two assists for a five point
outing. Also earning assists on the night were Ashton, Jeremy
Slocumb, Dalton
LeMaster, and Keane each earned one assist on the night.
Leading the team in ground balls were NeCamp, Roy
Hansen, and Harrison
Bluestein with three apiece, while Lucas
Brush led the team in caused turnovers with four while adding
two ground balls. Earning his second start of the season, freshman
goalie Landon
Salie made seven saves while allowing 18 goals has he faced 42
shots from the Spartans.
After their tough loss, the Tars received votes once again the
USILA Division II Poll. The Tars have matched up with four
nationally-ranked programs so far this season, falling to two of
those opponents by just one goal, while another game was decided by
two.
The Lions enter into Saturday's matchup with a record of 8-2 and
0-1 in SSC action. Saint Leo is coming off of a 20-9 victory over
Young Harris on Sunday, March 26. The Lions, who donned camo
uniforms, honored all who have served in the armed forces,
including their own Chris Burke, a veteran of the United States
Marine Corps, and Nick Argitis, a current member of the United
States Army ROTC.
The Lions saw sophomore Charlie Kurtenbach finish with a
career-high six points with three goals and three assists. Juniors
Kyle Pauwels and Anthony Visintin each added five points. Pauwels
scored four goals and added an assist, while Visintin tallied three
goals and added two assists for a career-high five points. Jake
Gilmour added four points with two goals and two assists, while
Bruce Preeschl and Zach Lysyk each had three points. Preeschl
tallied two goals and an assist, while Lysyk added a goal and two
assists.
So far this year, Saint Leo has matched up against two
nationally-ranked opponents, defeating then No. 7 LIU Post in their
season opener on February 3, before falling to then No. 2 Limestone
by a final score of 17-10 back on March 4. In Sunshine State
Conference competition, Florida Southern took down the Lions by a
final score of 15-13 on Friday, March 24, marking the first time
the Saint Leo has lost at home this season and snapping a four game
win streak.

Taicher lead the team so far this season with 23 goals apiece,
while Taicher leads the team in overall points with the addition of
a team high 12 assists. So far this season, 14 different Tars have
dished out assists, while 14 have contributed goals. Lucas
Brush leads the team with 30 ground balls, followed by Andrew
Matthews with 26, and Trey
LaPorta with 20. LaPorta has earned a .506 win percentage at
the faceoff-x, winning 83-of-164, while Brett
Portera has won 16-of-31 for a win percentage of .516.
Defensively, Brush leads the team in caused turnovers with 16,
followed by Evan
Schimek with eight and Austin
Jackson with seven. In goal for the Tars, Jake
Hogan has played and started in eight games for a total of
453:50 minutes. Hogan has faced 228 shots, earning 72 saves for a
save percentage of .507, while allowing 70 goals for an average of
9.25. Landon
Salie has played in three games, earning two starts for a total
of 149:10 in cage. Salie has faced 76 shots, earning 12 saves for
a save percentage of .273. The freshman has allowed 32 goals,
averaging 12.87 per game.
TRACKING THE LIONS:
The Lions are led by Kyle Pauwels, who has amassed 42 goals so
far this season, followed by Jake Gilmour with 25. Gilmour leads
the team in assists and overall points, dishing out 28 assists for
53 points so far this year. Charlie Kurtenbach is next with 10
assists, adding to 18 goals for 28 points. Pauwels has added eight
assists of his own for 50 points in 10 games played. Mitch Wilson
has picked up a team high 65 ground balls, followed by Austin
Dipietro with 32 and Jake Kavanagh with 30. Jake Bye has caused a
team best 18 turnovers, followed by Ethan Ticehurst with 11.
Faceoff specialist Mitch Wilson has won 104-of-153 taken, followed
by Dipietro winning 68-of-117, and Jake Kavanagh winning 6-of-9,
and Jack Spera winning 4-of-5. Thomas Tartarian has played and
started in nine games, seeing a total of 495 minutes in cage for
the Lions. The sophomore has earned a save percentage of .590
after making 111 saves, allowing only 77 goals for a goals against
average of 9.33. Ryan Kolesnikov has seen time in two games for 45
minutes, making six saves for a save percentage of .600 while
averaging 5.33 goals per game, allowing four. Ian Areford has
played in three games, earning one start, for a total of 60 minutes
of action. The freshman has earned 10 saves for a save percentage
of .769, while allowing three goals this season.
NOTES:
- The Tars are 2-11 in the all-time series with the Lions.
- Rollins, who has won the last two matchups against the Lions,
defeated then No. 17 Saint Leo for the first time in program
history on March 26, 2016 by a final score of 12-10. The Tars then
went on to take down the Lions in SSC Tournament action, defeating
SLU by a score of 10-9 in overtime on April 29, 2016.
- Five of the Tars' nine games this season have been decided by
just one goal. In those games, Rollins is 3-2 on the season
- Rollins is 2-2 on the season when playing at home.

The Tars will continue SSC play on Saturday April 8, when
they travel to Boca Raton to take on Lynn University. Game time
