WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 3, 2017) - The Tars
started slow, going down three runs after the top of the first
inning, but responded to gather a big Sunshine State Conference
victory in the opener of their three game series against Florida
Southern. With the win Rollins improves to 10-8 on the season, and
2-2 in SSC action. The Mocs fall to 8-6, and 4-3 in conference
play.
Rollins got big nights from senior Chelsea
Reed and freshman Sarah
Piening. Reed registered her first multi-homerun game as a
Tar, while Piening stymied the Mocs, giving up just four hits and
one run in 7.0 innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
· Florida Southern started the game with
back-to-back-to-back doubles to chase the Rollins starter Grace
Street. Sarah
Piening entered the circle and got the Tars out of the frame,
but not before the Mocs put three runs on the board. The inning
could have been even bigger but Desirae Klumpp grounded out to
second with the bases loaded to end the frame.
· Rollins responded with a three spot of their own in
the bottom of the first. The two out rally started with a Kacie
Booth single which was followed by a Brianne
Lint walk. Chelsea
Reed then came to the plate and blasted her first homerun of
the night to even the score at 3-3.
· Reed sparked the Tars again in the bottom of the
third, hitting a one out double. She then came around on a wild
pitch to give the Tars a 4-3 lead.
· The Mocs evened the score in the top of the fifth.
Florida Southern loaded the bases with no outs, but some heads up
defense by the Tars, including the shortstop Booth throwing out a
runner headed home after a slow ground ball, kept the Mocs to just
one run, with a pair left on base.
· The Tars exploded in the bottom of the sixth. Hailee
Keisling doubled down the right field line to start off the
frame. Sarah
Harrison walked, and both runners advanced with some heads-up
base running, tagging on a foul out. Keisling scored on a passed
ball, and Lint laid down a bunt single to bring home Harrison.
Reed then came up a soared a ball over the left field fence to
expand the Tars' lead to 8-4.
· Piening secured the victory with a one, two, three
seventh inning, including striking out the final two
batters.
