SPARKS, Md. (March 24, 2017) - Holding onto a
one goal lead at the half, the seventh-ranked Rollins women's
lacrosse team used a strong second half to overcome a resilient
16th-ranked Grand Valley State University squad,
defeating the Lakers by a final score of 16-10 on Sunday afternoon
at Tierney Field.
The win marks the ninth-straight for the Tars and advances their
overall record to 10-2 on the season, while GVSU drops to a mark of
1-6 on the season.
Kallie
German led the team in goals and overall points, netting four
goals and adding one assist for a five point performance. Freshman
Hannah
Ashton matched German in goals with four, while senior Brittany
Eveler earned four points on the day as she notched three
straight goals in the second half and dished out an assist in the
first for four points on the afternoon. Maggie
Dougherty and Paige
Brock tallied two goals and one assist apiece, while Lily
Rizk netted one goal of her own. Leading the team in ground
balls was Paige
Brock with five, followed by Lindsay
Van Beck and Hannah
Ashton with four each. Leading the team in caused turonvers
was Van Beck with four, followed by Rizk with three. Off of the
draw, Dougherty and Kaitlin
Prince won three each to lead the team. In goal, Malorie
Olin played 51:33 minutes between the pipes, making two saves
while allowing eight goals. Sarah
Neely saw 8:27 in cage, earning one save while allowing two
goals.
The Lakers were led by Sarah Stagaard with three goals, followed
by Kira Dosenberry with three points as she notched two goals and
one assist. Ashley Bailey and Abbi O'Neal scored a goal and an
assist each, while Maria D'Angelo, Meggan Loyd, and Carly Shisler
scored one goal apiece. Adding assists were Chelsey Bishop, and
Elizabeth Yeomans with one apiece. The Lakers saw Aimee Hite pick
up a team high three ground balls, while O'Neal won a team best
five draw controls. Defensively, GVSU saw three different plays
cause one turnover apiece. In goal, Sarah Zwilsky shouldered the
loss, earning five saves and allowing seven goals in the first
half. Brianna DeMilia closed out the game, making five saves while
allowing nine goals.
HIGHLIGHTS AND HALF ANALYSIS
First Half l Rollins opened the game with two
unassisted goals by Ashton and P. Brock before the Lakers battled
back and rattled off three straight to take 3-2 lead wit 17:18 to
go in the first half. Both teams traded blows to set the score at
5-4 in favor of GVSU with 8:14 to go in the period, but Ashton and
P. Brock got to work once more, netting back-to-back goals to give
the Tars a 6-5 lead with 4:07 left in the half. Grand Valley State
knotted the board at 6-6 with a goal by Shisler with 3:32 on the
clock, but a late goal by Dougherty off of an assist by German gave
the Tars the 7-6 lead at the break.
Second Half l The Tars scored three straight in
the first 10 minutes of the second half, taking a 10-6 lead with
20:41 on the clock. The Lakers broke the run with a goal by
D'Angelo off of an assist by O'Neal, but the Tars bounced back and
scored four unanswered goals, including three straight by Eveler,
to take a 14-7 lead with 9:17 to play. Two goals by GVSU pulled
the Lakers to within five, 14-9, with 8:03 on the clock, but
Rollins notched back-to-back goals by Ashton and German to extend
their lead to seven, 16-9, with 2:08 left. The Lakers found the
back of the net a minute later to close the deficit to six, but the
Tars earned the 16-10 victory.
GAME NOTES
- Rollins has won nine-straight
- The Tars have tallied 16 total goals as a team in four of their
last five games, including three straight.
- Rollins how now matched up against five opponents who were
ranked on the IWLCA DII Poll at the time of competition.
- Sunday's game marks the first time Rollins and Grand Valley
State University have met in competition. Rollins now leads the
series with the Lakers, 1-0.
- Sunday's game against the Tars marked the seventh time that
Grand Valley State has taken on a ranked opponent this season, four
of which were opponents ranked within the top three at the time of
competition.
