SET-UP:
After splitting last weekends contests in Pensacola,
falling to No. 7 West Florida, before besting Alabama Huntsville,
Rollins returns to the court to face their most daunting week of
the season. The Tars will host No. 4 Saint Leo to Winter Park on
Wednesday afternoon, then head on the road to take on a pair of
top-ranked opponent. Rollins travels to Nova Southeastern, the
Sharks came in at No. 15 in the most recent ITA poll, and Lynn, who
climbed to No. 3 in the latest rankings.
TRACKING THE TARS:
Fabiana
Vitanza continues to play exclusively out of the first position
for the Tars, amassing a record of 3-3 on the year. The Junior is
coming off a hard fought win over Marleen Gort of
Alabama-Huntsville, 6-4, 7-5. Teresa
Kaiser has split time between the fifth and sixth spot for the
Tars, and has earned a 5-1 record to lead Rollins. The Omaha,
Nebraska native defeated Marta Briega of Alabama-Huntsville
convincingly, capturing a straight set victory.
The Tars have used five doubles pairs to this point in the
season. Alexandra
Borg and Shannon
Etten have gone 3-2, playing out of the second position. The
team upended the second position team from No. 7 West Florida in
their contest last Saturday. Kaiser and Savanna
Fuller have gone 3-1 on the year, playing out of the third
spot.
TRACKING THE LIONS:
Despite their lofty ranking, Saint Leo struggled out of
the gate in February. The Lions sit at 2-3 and 1-2 in Sunshine
State Conference play. The Lions defeats have come against staunch
competition, falling to No. 15 Nova Southeastern, No. 1 Armstrong
State, and No. 6 Barry.
Marie Buegre-Guyot leads the Lions. As the No. 24 player in the
country, and No. 7 player in the south region, she has played out
of the first position for the Lions. The Brou sur Chantereine,
France native has gone 2-2 on the year. Anastasia Wagner came into
the year as the No. 12 ranked player in the south region.
Beugre-Guyot and Madeleine Gauthier team up to make the No. 9
ranked doubles pair in the south region, however, the two have yet
to play together this season. Seeing most of the action out of the
first doubles spot for the Lions has been Beugre-Guyot and Maja
Pindelska.
TRACKING THE SHARKS:
Nova Southeastern has split their first six matches, and
enter their contest with the Tars with a record of 3-3. All of the
Sharks losses have been by one game, falling to No. 12 Flagler, No.
14 Valdosta State, and Tampa. The Sharks did pick up a convincing,
7-1, win over No. 4 Saint Leo.
Liucelena Perez leads the Sharks, going a perfect 5-0 out of the
first position. The Valencia, Venezuela native has upset two
nationally ranked opponents and one who was listed among the
regional rankings. Nastassia Rubel has also flourished as a
singles player, amassing a 4-2 record out of the third
position.
Nova Southeastern has dominated doubles play this season, going
14-4 in pairs matches. Perez teams up with Isabella Lowery to form
the Sharks first doubles pairing. The two have gone 5-1 on the
year. Rubel and Simone Pratt are 6-0 out of the second
position.
TRACKING THE FIGHTING KNIGHTS:
Lynn has been dominant this season, losing four combined
games on their way to a 7-0 record. The Knights controlled No. 14
Valdosta State, 8-1, No. 8 Columbus State, 5-0, and No. 1 Armstrong
State, 5-1.
Five Knights register on the regional top-20 rankings, led by
Diana Bogolii. The Ukranian is ranked No. 12 nationally and has
earned a 4-2 record on the year, playing out of the first and third
positions. She is followed closely by Rosie Willig, the senior is
ranked No. 16 nationally and has gone a perfect 3-0 out of the
second and third positions. Grace Mpassy and Stephanie Stemmer
also check in on the nationally rankings, at No. 23, and No. 39
respectively.
Lynn has not lost a doubles match yet this season, going 21-0 on
the year. Bogolii and Willig team up to create the No. 1 doubles
pairing in all of Division II. The two are a perfect 7-0 on the
year, and have bested two nationally ranked opponent and four
regionally ranked challengers. Mpassy and Stemmer are 6-0 out f
the second position.
NEXT:
Rollins will host a pair of teams to Winter Park Florida
next week. Embry-Riddle will visit Rollins on Wednesday, March 8,
with first serve at 3:30 p.m. The Tars will take on Wayne State on
Friday, March 10, at 2 p.m. at the Tiedtke Tennis Courts.
