WINGATE, N.C. (February 26, 2017) - The
sixth-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team got back to their
winning ways on Sunday afternoon as five different Tars scored en
route to a 9-3 win over Wingate University on Sunday afternoon at
the Graham Gill Field at the Irwin Belk Track Complex. The win
advances the Tars to a record of 2-2 on the season, while the
Bulldogs drip to 1-1 overall on their young season.
Leading the way for the second straight game was sophomore Kallie
German, who netted a game high three goals and added an assist
for a game high four points. Hannah
Ashton and Paige
Brock each scored twice, followed by Claire
Block with one, and defender Lindsay
Van Beck notching the first goal of her collegiate career.
Adding to the assists were Hannah
Coakley and Maggie
Dougherty with one apiece. In goal, Malorie
Olin saw a full 60 minutes between the pipes, allowing just
three goals while earning 14 saves, including nine in the second
half.
The Bulldogs saw a team high two goals from Paulena Dempsey,
followed by Shannon O'Neal with one of her own. None of the
Bulldogs' goals were assisted on the afternoon. In goal, Ario
Pierre played a full game, earning 18 saves, including 13 in the
first half, while facing 34 shots from the Tars.
HIGHLIGHTS AND HALF ANALYSIS
First Half l The game began with
a goal by Dempsey to give Wingate their lone lead of the contest a
little over three minutes into the game. Rollins had nine
different looks on goal, all saved by Pierre, before finally
finding the back of the net with 14:22 on the clock thanks to a
goal by Ashton off of an assist by German. Rollins pulled into a
2-1 lead six minutes later as German converted a free position
shot, and neither team scored in the remaining minutes, closing out
the first half with Rollins leading 2-1.
Second Half l Wingate again
opened up play with a goal by Dempsey, knotting the score at 2-2
just 47 seconds into the second stanza. Rollins answered back four
minutes later with a goal by Ashton off of an assist by Coakley to
set the score at 3-2 with 25:34 on the clock, igniting a five goal
run over eight minutes that extended the Tars' lead to 7-2 with
17:44 to go. O'Neal broke the streak with a goal at the 13:27
mark, but it proved to be the last goal of the game for the
Bulldogs while the Tars added two more to close out the contest
with a final score of 9-3.
GAME NOTES
- This marked the first time the two teams have met in
competition. Rollins now holds onto the series advantage,
1-0.
- The Tars had seven different free position shots in the first
half, and just three in the second period.
- Sophomore defender Lindsay
Van Beck notched the first goal of her collegiate career.
- Dennis
Short has accumulated a record of 106-44 in his tenth season
with the Tars, and holds onto a career record of 126-90 in his 14
years as a head coach.

The Tars return to action on Friday, March 3, when they host
Wheeling Jesuit at Barker Family Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur
