CHARLOTTE, N.C. (February 24, 2017) - Squaring
up against their second opponent ranked within the IWLCA Division
II Preseason Top-10, the sixth-ranked Rollins women's lacrosse team
suffered a 6-3 setback to No. 9 Queens on Friday afternoon at the
Queens Sports Complex. The loss drops the Tars to a mark of 1-2 on
the season, while Queens, who also matched up against their second
nationally-ranked opponent in as many games, advances their young
record to 1-1.
Sophomore Kallie
German led the way with two points on the afternoon, notching a
goal and an assist, followed by Hannah
Ashton and Megan
Cury with one goal apiece. In goal, Rollins saw Malorie
Olin play a full game, earning seven saves, including four in
the second half.
The Royals, who opened their home slate this afternoon against
the Tars, were led in scoring by Katie Wardle with two goals and
one assist. Allison Conn, Shannon Mansberger, Ally Blood, and
Abigail Paulus tallied one goal each, while Hannah Scott chipped in
an assist. In goal, Chase Brokaw earned 12 saves while allowing
only three goals.
HIGHLIGHTS AND HALF ANALYSIS
First Half l German kicked off
the game with an unassisted goal with 22:02 on the clock, giving
the Tars their first lead of the contest. Queens finally found the
back of the net at the 13:41 mark off of a goal by Blood thanks to
an assist by Hanna to knot the score at 1-1. However, Rollins
answered back a shade under three minutes later as Ashton found the
back of the net with 11 minutes to play in the first period.
Queens closed out the first half with two straight to pull ahead to
a 3-2 advantage, gaining the lead with 5:02 to play thanks to a
converted free-position shot by Wardle.
Second Half l Queens opened up
the second half by notching their third straight goal of the
contest, pulling out to a 4-2 lead with 22:47 to play. Rollins
answered back with a goal by Cury off of a German assist to pull to
within one, 4-3, with 18:19 to go, but the Royals closed out the
game with two unanswered goals to earn their first win of the
season with a final score of 6-3.
GAME NOTES
- The Tars squared up against Queens for the ninth time in
program history.
- Rollins holds onto a 6-3 advantage over the Royals in the
all-time series
- Their last matchup resulting in a 12-5 Rollins victory on March
7, 2016, when then sixth-ranked Rollins hosted a Queens squad that
was ranked at No. 14.
- Dennis
Short has accumulated a record of 105-44 in his tenth season
with the Tars, and holds onto a career record of 126-90 in his 14
years as a head coach.

Rollins returns to action when they close out their weekend road
trip on Sunday, February 26, against Wingate University. Game time
