McDonough Notches Season Highs in Five Set Heartbreaker at Tampa

McDonough Earns Season Bests in Kills (24) and Digs (20)


TAMPA, Fla. (November 3, 2017) – Senior Shannon McDonough notched season highs in kills and digs as the Tars fell in a hard fought five set battle to the University of Tampa on Friday evening in the Martinez Center. The five-set (15-25, 31-29, 24-15, 27-25, 15-27) heartbreaker drops the Rollins volleyball team to a mark of 8-15 overall and 5-11 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the Spartans advance to a record of 12-13, and 7-7 in the SSC.

McDonough notched a season best in both kills and digs, earning her 16th double-double of the season as she posted 24 kills and 20 digs to lead the match in both categories.  The senior from Orlando, Fla. notched her 20th match this season with a final kills tally in the double-digits as she hit .312 on the night.  Madison Jenkins tallied a career best in kills with 13, earning a hitting percentage of .265 en route to her career day.  Rachel Fletcher and Mary Bethany Vincent each notched six kills, while Sam Schlesman added five of her own.  Dishing out the assists was Cassidy Cason with 47 on the night while she added nine digs.  Behind McDonough's match best 20 digs, Rebecca Wilson earned 18 of her won, while Fletcher notched 13.  Vincent had a day at the net, posting up five blocks, followed by Schlesman with four, and Cason, McDonough, and Jenkins with three apiece.

The Spartans saw a team best 18 kills from Sorrel Houghton, followed by 17 from Nicole Dominguez, and 16 from Taylor Fosler.  Sammy Mueller had a career match as she earned 61 assists on the night while earning 11 digs for a double-double.  Dominguez also earned a double-double as she added 15 digs to her 17 kills, while Molly McAlvany and Nylah Demps earned 11 and 10 digs, respectively.  Alexandra Misca put up a match best six total blocks, followed by Demps with four, and Fosler and Mueller with two each.

NOTES:

  • Rollins and Tampa have now matched up 94 times since their first meeting on November 12, 1977.  The Spartans lead the all-time series, 88-6.
  • Last time out against the Spartans, The Tars battled through four sets to come out on top in a match that saw the score tied 45 times while the lead change hands on 16 different occasions.  Set three proved to be the most challenging as the Tars saw the score tied 19 times while the lead changed seven times.
  • The Tars' victory back on September 30th marked the first time in seven years that Rollins has taken down Tampa.  The last time Rollins earned a victory over the Spartans was on September 25, 2010 when the Tars won, 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-21).
  • McDonough notched season highs in both kills (24) and digs (20), earning her 16th double-double of the season, and 20th match with a kill total in the double-digits.  McDonough was four kills away from matching her career high of 28 set on Sept. 14, 2016 against Flagler, as well as four digs away from matching her career best of 24 set on October 18, 2016 against Embry-Riddle
  • Madison Jenkins earned a new career best in kills with 13
