Tars Close Out 2017 Campaign in Hard Fought Five Set Loss to Lynn

Tirado Notches a Career High in Kills with 14


BOCA RATON, Fla. (November 17, 2017) – Junior middle blocker Kerra Tirado earned a career high 14 kills while putting up a match best seven blocks as the Tars fell in a hard fought five set battle to Lynn University on Friday evening in the de Hoernle Center.  The 3-2 (18-25, 25-18, 24-26, 26-20, 11-15) loss closes out the Tars' 2017 campaign with a record of 9-18 overall and 6-14 in Sunshine State Conference action, while Lynn concludes their season with a record of 9-17 and 7-13 in SSC play.

Tirado closed out her junior year campaign on a high note with a career best 14 kills on a .458 hitting percentage while leading the match with seven blocks. Senior Shannon McDonough led the Tars in kills on the evening, earning 17 while she chipped in 11 digs for her 18th double-double of the season and added four blocks.  Rachel Fletcher earned her second straight double-double of her junior year, amassing a season best 12 kills while adding 12 digs.  Madison Jenkins contributed 11 kills of her own while adding eight kills and four blocks.  Sophomore Cassidy Cason earned a season second best 50 assists, amassing a setting percentage of .338 while earning a hitting percentage of .556 as she provided five kills while adding 10 digs, three blocks and two service aces.  Mary Bethany Vincent posted up five blocks of her own, while adding two kills and one dig. Senior Rebecca Wilson led the match with 22 digs on the night while adding five assists.

Lynn saw a match high 18 kills and from Sonja Udovcic, who added 18 digs for a double-double.  Rafaela Fonseca contributed 17 kills and 16 digs, while Nicol Colonna earned 11 kills and 31 assists.  Angala Jensen dished out 21 assists of her own, and added seven digs, while Ariana Rodriguez led the team in digs with 22.  Both Rodriguez and Danessa Martin earned two aces apiece.  At the net on defense, Lauren Odom put up six blocks, including three solo stops, while Marcella De Vuono earned five total blocks, and Colona put up four.

COACH ROBINSON'S THOUGHTS:
"While the 5th set didn't go the way we wanted, I could not have been prouder of how hard we fought tonight. Both teams absolutely battled. Our seniors are going to be missed greatly, but they have left a wonderful legacy for this group to carry forward and build on in the years to come."

NOTES:

  • Tars hold onto a record of 18-24 overall against Lynn.  The first time the two teams matched up on the court was back in 1997.
  • Friday night's match against Lynn marked the second time the two teams met on the court this season.  Last time out against the Fighting Knights, the Tars earned a 3-2 victory at home in Warden Arena, defeating Lynn (26-28, 25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 15-6).
  • Tirado earned a new career high in kills in a match, besting her previous career high of 11, which she reached on six different occasions.
  • McDonough earned her 24th game of the season with double-digit kills, and picked up her 18th double-double of her senior year.
  • Cassidy Cason notched her ninth double-double of her sophomore campaign with 50 assists and 10 digs.
  • Cason's 50 assists mark a season second best, with her season high of 55 assists set against Lynn back on October 19.
  • Cason matched a career best in kills in a match with five
  • Alexis Paxton earned the first service ace of her career, and notched a career best two digs.
  • Rachel Fletcher tallied a season high 12 kills, and notched her second double-double of the season as she added 12 digs.
  • The score was tied on 25 different occasions, including 11 times in the third set.  The Lead changed hands 10 times, including four times in sets three and four.
