WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 21, 2017) – The Tars were able to keep their SSC tournament hopes alive with a vital win over newly promoted Sunshine State Conference member Embry-Riddle, 1-0. Chynna McGirt would tally her second goal of the season in the 85th minute to put the Tars ahead off of a Molly Von Eschenbach cross. Rollins improves to 4-8-2 overall, and 3-4-2 in the SSC, while Embry-Riddle drops to 4-5-3 overall, and 2-4-3 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
First Half: It was an even battle between the Tars and the Eagles for most of the first half. Rollins was able to outshoot Embry-Riddle 5-4, and force two saves from the Eagles goalkeeper. Kelly Rowswell also made two first half stops to help keep the teams level, while the Eagles attempted four corners, to the Tars two.
Second Half: The Tars would waste no time putting the Eagles under pressure defensively. Rollins came close to opening the scoring in the 67th minute, when Jill Richards shot the ball, only to see it come off the crossbar and back into play. Again, it was Rollins who would be denied by the woodwork in the 85th minute when Kiera McMeekan's header would glance off the post, causing the Eagles defense to scramble and clear the ball out of play. Shortly after, Von Escenbach would gather the ball on the left side, cut back on her right foot, and deliver the ball into the box to find McGirt at the back post. The Vero Beach, Florida native would take a touch to settle the ball and blast it into the roof of the net for her first game winning goal in her career. Rollins would see the rest of the game out, and come away with a 1-0 victory over Embry-Riddle.
NOTES:
- The Tars improve their all-time record over Embry-Riddle to 10-3-1
- McGirt scored her second goal of the season, she now leads Rollins with four points
