FINAL SCORE:

Saint Leo (4-7-0) (3-5-0) – 2

SAINT LEO, Fla. (October 18, 2017) – The Tars found themselves down early when Saint Leo was able to grab an early go-ahead goal in the sixth minute of play off a rebound. Rollins would eventually battle back and tie the score in the second half when Jill Richards found the back of the net off of a Kat Weiss assist. After 90 minutes of play, both teams would need extra time to try to find a winner, and it was the Lions who would score in the 105th minute of play to defeat the Tars, 2-1 in double overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Half: Rollins surrendered an early lead to the Lions, who found themselves ahead by a goal just six minutes into the match when Angelina Troche was able to clean up a rebound and put it into the back of the net. Throughout the half, both teams would be evenly matched in almost every category, including shots and saves where Saint Leo held a slight lead in both categories, 7-5, and 4-3. The Tars would head into halftime down, 1-0.

Second Half: Rollins came out and immediately put the pressure onto the Lions defense. The Tars fired ten shots off in the half, and earned two corners in the process. One of those shots would finally find the back of the net in the 67th minute. Kat Weiss would take the ball down the right side and find Jill Richards who was able to put it back across the goal and into the top left corner to even the game at one apiece. The Lions and the Tars would come to a stalemate in the final 23 minutes of action, and the teams would head into overtime, 1-1.

Overtime: In the first overtime period, it was all Tars. Rollins ripped the only two shots of the period onto the Saint Leo goal, but goalkeeper Megan Charlton was up for the task, and made two overtime saves. However, it was the Lions who would net the game-winner in the 105th minute of double overtime to seal the victory, when Victoria Covas got past her defender and beat goalkeeper Kelly Rowswell to defeat the Tars, 2-1.

NOTES:

  • The Tars still lead the all-time series against Saint Leo, 19-7-1
  • Kat Weiss recorded her ninth assist of her career in the 2-1 defeat to Saint Leo
  • Rowswell registered seven saves against the Lions
  • Jill Richards notched her first career goal as a Tar, and her third point of the season tying her for the team lead
