WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 19, 2016) - An
all-around disciplined team effort saw the Rollins men's lacrosse
team earn a 7-5 come-from-behind victory over the Colorado Mesa
University Mavericks on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Barker Family
Stadium and Cahall-Sandspur Field.
The win advances the Tars to a record of 6-3, while the
Mavericks drop to 2-4 on the season.
The Tars found themselves trailing by one, 4-3 entering into the
third quarter, but disciplined efforts on both sides of the field
saw Rollins come from behind in the final quarter to outscore
Colorado Mesa 4-1 in order to secure the win.
Jack
Vonarb led the team in goals, netting a game high four on the
afternoon. Morgan
Baker scored two goals and one assist for three points on the
day, while Carson
Buell found the back of the net once and assisted on one goal
for a two point game.
On the faceoff, Alex
Petsos won 10-of 15 faceoff attempts, earning a game high eight
ground balls.
In goal for Rollins, Jake
Hogan made 11 saves in a full 60 minutes between the pipes.
The sophomore faced a total of 32 shots and 16 shots on goal from
Colorado Mesa, holding the Mavericks to just one goal in the final
three quarters to help the Tars earn the regional victory.
The Mavericks were led in scoring by Jake Douglas, who scored
two goals on the afternoon. Calen Ketcham, Aaron Eggiman, and
Reece Callies scored one goal apiece, while Connor Morgan earned
two assists, and David Solomon tallied one assist.
It was a chess math from the start as both teams played out
disciplined attacks while each defense was patient and persistent.
Colorado Mesa was the first on the scoreboard as Callies put a ball
in the back of the net off of an assist by Morgan with 3:57 on the
clock in the first quarter, opening the scoring action for the
day. Rollins answered back less than a minute later as Vonarb
placed a ball between the pipes off of an assist by Baker with 2:30
to go in the period, but a late goal by Douglas with two ticks on
the clock gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead at the end of the first
quarter.
Vonarb evened the game at 2-2 with a goal off of an assist by
Buell with 12:06 to go before the half, but the Mavericks pulled
ahead on an unassisted goal by Douglas at the 5:08 mark to close
out the scoring in the second quarter with Colorado Mesa leading
3-2 at the half.
The Mavericks extended their lead to two in the third quarter
thanks to a goal by Ketcham with 6:09 remaining in the quarter, but
the Tars pulled back to within one thanks to an unassisted goal by
Baker with 5:37 on the clock to set the score at 4-3 in favor of
CMU entering into the final period.
Buell evened the game early in the fourth quarter, scoring on an
unassisted goal with 13:29 left in the game to even the scoreboard
at 4-4. The Tars used discipline to their advantage throughout the
remainder of the quarter, and netted two more goals to pull ahead
6-4 with 2:42 to play. Colorado Mesa's Morgan connected a pass to
Eggiman for a goal with just 35 seconds left in the game, pulling
to within one, 6-5.
Rollins won the ensuing faceoff and called a quick timeout.
When play resumed, the Tars found themselves with an open goal as
the Mavericks pulled the goalie onto the field for complete
man-to-man coverage. Vonarb was able to capitalize on the open
goal just seconds later, scoring on an open net with 21 ticks on
the clock, and Rollins pulled ahead to a two goal lead, 7-5.
Despite Colorado Mesa's best efforts off of the faceoff, Rollins
was able to secure the victory.
The Tars led the game in shots 38-32, as well as shots on goal,
18-16. Rollins also held the edge in ground balls, 17-13, as well
as controlled possession on the faceoff, winning 10-of-16. Rollins
was successful on 11-of-13 clear attempts, while the Mavericks
completed 15-of-17 clears.
Rollins opens up Sunshine State Conference play when they travel
