The Tars open their 2016 Spring season on Wednesday, traveling
to St. Augustine to take on the Saints.
ROLLINS AT A GLANCE: In her 30th
season at the helm of the women's tennis program, head coach Beverly
Buckley returns six starters back this season and add four new
faces. The Tars lost starter Angela
Crowley, but returned several key players, including seniors Carli
Davis and Emma
Wookey. Also, returning for the Tars this season are juniors Shannon
Etten and Johanna
Olsson, and sophomores Fabiana
Vitanza and Zoe
Monge.
Etten had a fantastic season last year with Rollins as one of
the Tars most consistent players, and is returning at No. 1 in both
singles and doubles. She notched a record of 10-6 in singles last
spring season and finished at No. 31 in the ITA National Singles
Rankings.
Overall, last season the Tars women's tennis team finished 8-13
last spring. Rollins wrapped up their fall tournament scheduled
last October, competing in a three-day Juan Varon Memorial Wildcat
Tennis Invitational in Daytona Beach. Newcomers Teresa Kaiser,
Savanna Fuller,, Carlye Goldman andHayley Macpherson all competed
along with Fabiana Vitanza and Johanna Olsson. Coming into this
spring season the Tars are selected fifth in the SCC Poll.
FLAGLER AT A GLANCE: The Saints are coming off
of a 6-3 win to No. 39 Palm Beach Atlantic last Sunday afternoon at
the Flagler Tennis Center. Mary Jo Nanti and Kelly Bruge lead the
way for the Saints, defeating PBA's Valerie Nagovitcina and Yoana
Peshev, 9-8, at No. 1 doubles. However, it was the Saint's Lizanne
Jinkertz that clinched the match, defeating Maja Jovic in straight
sets. This win pullied the Saints record to 1-1. Flagler previously
lost to North Florida 7-0 to open the year.
FCS Probable Lineup: No. 1 singles
Kelly Stewart, No. 2 singles Mary Jo Nanti, No.3 singles Thaisa
Pereira, No. 4 singles Lizanna Jinkertz, No. 5 singles Kelly Burge,
and No. 6 singles Laura Kelly. No. 1 doubles Burge/Jo Nanti, No. 2
doubles Pereira/Jonkertz, and No. 3 doubles Kelly/Stewart..
LAST MEETING: In March of last season, Rollins
fell to Flagler, 5-4, in Winter Park. The Tars number one doubles
team, Shannon
Etten and Johanna
Olsson won 9-7, while Fabiana
Vitanza and Carli
Davis won 8-4. In singles, then No. 27-ranked Etten won in
straight sets, 6-0, 7-6 (4). Zoe
Monge won for the second straight match, 7-6 (5), 7-5
