Rollins Prepped for Round Two Against Florida Tech

SETUP:

With nine matches remaining in their 2016 regular season slate, the Rollins volleyball team will look to get back to its winning ways as they welcome Florida Tech to Warden Arena on Tuesday evening. After defeating the Panthers by a score of 3-2 (25-16, 28-30, 25-16, 22-25, 15-12) earlier this season, the Tars will look to sweep the season series against FIT for the first time since 2014.

WHO TO WATCH:

Rollins: Having played in 82 of the Tars' 84 total sets this season, junior Shannon McDonough holds onto a team best 339 kills so far this season, averaging 4.13 per set. Fellow classmate Bri Civiero is right on McDonough's heels with 332 kills, throwing down an average of 4.10 per set. Sophomore Sam Schlesman has posted 115 kills in 74 sets played, and leads the team in blocks with 68, including a team high 12 solo blocks. Freshmen Cassidy Cason and Gina Cappetta have been dishing out the assists, with Cason earning 522 in 61 sets played, and Cappetta notching 360 in 46 sets. Junior Rebecca Wilson leads the team in service aces with 21, and also holds onto a team high 382 digs. Wilson recently surpassed the milestone 1000 dig mark in career, earning her career achievement against Saint Leo on Saturday, October 29.

Head Coach Mika Robinson took over the Tars program in February and has aligned Rollins for success this season. She was head coach at Berry College the past eight seasons, amassing a record of 169-88 with three conference championships and to NCAA Division III Tournament berths.

Florida Tech: The Panthers are led by Kelly Germain, who as posted 185 kills this season, earning an average of 2.61 per set. Germain is followed by Olivia Hersey, who as notched 179 kills with an average of 2.59 per set. Also pulling in a triple-digit kill count this season is Jenna Schaffer, who has tallied 158, averaging 2.19 per set. Nicole Fortuna leads the Panthers in service aces, compiling 23 in 38 sets played. Defensively, Becca Bower leads the squad in digs, scooping up 346 in 72 sets played for an average of 4.81 per set. At the net, Hersey holds onto a team best 73.0 blocks including a team high 16 solo blocks as she averages 1.06 per set. In total, seven different Panthers have posted double-digit block counts so far this season.

Now in her fifth season with the Panthers, head coach Amy O'Brien wrapped up her fourth season at the helm of FIT with a 13-16 overall and 4-12 mark in the SSC. O'Brien holds onto a career record of 53-66, and 16-48 within the SSC. Under her tutelage at FIT, she has coached one First Team All-SSC player, one Honorable Mention All-SSC player, one Freshman All-SSC selection, and one Daktronics All-South Region Second Team honoree.

NOTES:

Rollins enters into Tuesday's matchup on a five match skid that has included losses to then No. 23 Tampa, as well as SSC leader Saint Leo. The Tars will look to right the ship against Florida Tech, who they took down in a thrilling five-setter back on September 16. The Tars earned their lone conference victory so far this season by a score of 3-2 (25-16, 28-30, 25-16, 22-25, 15-12). Most recently, Rollins earned the win in Set 1, but ultimately found themselves on the bottom end of a 3-1 final score against Saint Leo on Saturday, October 29. Rollins currently holds onto a record of 9-13 and 1-7 in SSC play.

The Panthers enter into their matchup with the Tars riding a two match losing streak after falling in SSC action to Barry by a score of 3-1, and Lynn University bye a score of 3-0 this past weekend. The Panthers are 6-15 overall, and 0-9 in the Sunshine State Conference.
