Baseball Drops 7-5 Decision at West Florida

PENSACOLA, Fla.. (Feb. 6, 2015) - The Rollins baseball team (2-2) suffered a 7-5 loss to the West Florida Argos Friday evening in non-conference action.

In the Tars' 7-5 loss to West Florida, the team managed to tally nine hits. Rightfielder Zach Persky had two hits including his second home run of the season. Centerfielder Peter Nicoletto and designated hitter Blake Hutton also had two hits on the night.

Matt Hendricks suffered his first loss in 4.0 innings of work. The right-hander allowed five runs on four hits while walking five. Spencer Mumford finished the rest of the game working 4.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits while striking out five.

The Tars outhit the Argos 9-8 while Rollins had two errors to West Florida's three on the night.

West Florida began the bottom of the second drawing a walk and having a hit batter advance the lead-runner to second. The Argos scored four runs on two singles opening the game up.

Rollins quickly answered in the top of the third as Persky came to the plate and hit a two-run homerun to cut the UWF lead in half, 4-2. Peter Nicoletto then tripled and scored on a Philip Burket single as the Tars scored three runs on three hits.

The Argos capped off the bottom of the fifth with one run and tallied two more in the sixth to lead 7-3.

Mike Purcell began the ninth inning with a single as Zach Persky loaded the bases with a single to give Rollins a chance to eventually tie the game. Christian Coburn grounded out to the third baseman, scoring Purcell. Carlos Garmendia reached on the second error of the inning by West Florida as Chris Corbett scored to cut the UWF lead to 7-5. Grant Ashline pitch hit for the Tars and grounded out in a fielder's choice to end the game as Rollins ended the ninth with two runs on two hits.

The Tars left eight men on base, while UWF left seven on.

Rollins (2-2) faces Flagler from Pensacola, Saturday, Feb. 7 at 12 p.m.
