No. 13 Rollins Blows Past No. 34 Florida Southern 8-1

WINTER PARK, Fla. (February 25, 2015) - The No. 13 Rollins (2-3) men's tennis team defeated No. 34 Florida Southern (0-5) 8-1 in the Sunshine State Conference home opener Wednesday evening from the Bert W. Martin Complex.

Rollins led 3-0 after three very close doubles matches and then closed out the day winning five of the six singles matches. Anton Bettink, Adrian Di Felice and Patrick Sell all completed the day winning multiple matches.

The Tars climb to 2-3 and 1-1 in the SSC while Florida Southern drops to 0-5.

Rollins began with Anton Bettink and Adrian Di Felice at number one doubles. The match featured aggressive hitting as the Tars No. 19 ranked doubles team prevailed in a tiebreak 9-8 (2). At two doubles, Patrick Sell and Jacobo Herrero played a close match that had long rallies and came down to a few winners. Sell and Herrero claimed the 9-7 match win decided just before a potential third tiebreak in doubles. Malte Christesen and Henning Ander at three doubles led 4-3 before losing a break and falling behind 8-7. The tandem fought back and won the match in an extremely close tiebreak 9-8 (6).

In singles play, the Tars No. 10-ranked sophomore Anton Bettink began the first set cruising past his opponent using his fierce forehand combined with great footwork to win the first set 6-2. Bettink held firm in the second set as he commanded the court winning the second set in a 6-2 decisive fashion.

Patrick Sell also managed to win in straight sets, closing out his opponent 6-2, 7-5. In the first set Sell broke his opponent at 3-2 and pulled away winning the final four games. In the second set both players held serve until the final game as the sophomore won 7-5.

Robin Marchione began the first set trailing 3-2, but managed to break serve and take a 4-3 lead. Marchione, ranked No. 38 by the ITA, surged ahead in the final game of the first set with a break to win 6-4. At 2-2 in the second set Marchione broke his opponents serve once more and did not look back, winning the final set 6-3.

Junior Adrian Di Felice started off four singles in dominant fashion, holding serve throughout and winning 6-0. Di Felice managed to take control of the second set at 3-2 and won the final three games to win in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

At five singles, Jacobo Herrero battled back trailing one set to none as he broke serve in the final game of the second set to win 6-4. In the third set tiebreak, Herrero ended up falling 10-6.

Freshman Mike Santa Lucia also had a dominant day on court, defeating his opponent Derek Bell, 6-1, 6-1. Lucia began the first set breaking serve at 2-1 and winning the final five games as he won the set 6-1. Lucia kept the foot on the gas peddle leading 3-0 in the second set and breaking serve at 4-1 to finish off Bell 6-1, 6-1.

The Tars will play non-conference foe Chestnut Hill in a home match at 3 p.m Thursday, February 26 from the Tiedtke Complex.
