WINTER PARK, Fla. (November 17, 2015) - Rollins
put 100 points for the first time in seven years in Tuesday's home
opener, as the Tars blew past NAIA opponent, Ave Maria, 100-51. The
last time Rollins scored at least 100 points was back on November
20, 2008 at home against Puerto Rico - Cayey (112-68).
The Tars are now a perfect 3-0 on the year while the Gyrenes
fall to 0-5.
Sophomore Jeff
Merton led the way in the offensive onslaught, finishing with
19 points on 6-9 shooting, including 4-6 from behind the arc. Three
players recorded career bests in the victory, led by sophomore Sam
Philpott's 17. Junior Mike
Bedulskis scored a personal best 14 points while Joey
Galvis poured in nine to set a new career mark. Sharif
Almulla also scored in double figures with 10 in just 13
minutes.
Martez Harris led Ave Maria with 23 points but went just 1-7
from deep. Johnny Minervino added 11 and Exor Torres chipped in
with eight points in 27 minutes.
The Tars continued their hot shooting to open the year, shooting
a red hot 64.2 percent from the field (34-53) and are now averaging
over 95 points per game through three games. Rollins finished 21-24
from the line, including a perfect 11-11 in the first half.
The Tars also dominated on the glass, winning the rebound
battle, 33-20, and forced 24 turnovers.
Three point shooting kept the Gyrenes in the game early in the
first half, hitting their fifth over the first 10-plus minutes of
the game to keep within a score at the 9:23 mark.
The Tars would come back with a 13-0 run over the next three
minutes, capped off with a steal and bucket by junior Jack
Fleming with 6:15 left in the half, to give Rollins a 35-19
lead.
The lead would grow to 18 after a Deion
Clark jumper at the 3:40 mark and the Tars would eventually
take a 16 point lead into intermission, 47-31.
The second half was all Rollins, as they would push their lead
to 20 after a Bedulskis free throw early in the period and would
then just pour it on, steadily growing their lead over the next 15
minutes to secure the blowout victory in front of their first home
crowd of the year. The Tars shot over 73 percent from the floor in
the second half, outscoring Ave Maria, 53-20.
The Tars will get right back at it on Wednesday, hosting Warner
at 6 p.m. in their final tune-up before opening Conference play on
Saturday. Cans can watch all the action live on the Geico Tars
