WINTER PARK, Fla. (October 23, 2015) - The
Rollins volleyball team defeated the No. 2 team in the Sunshine
State Conference, earning a hard-fought 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-23)
victory over Saint Leo on Friday evening in Warden Arena.
Extending their win streak to five matches, the Tars improve their
record to 6-13 overall and 2-5 in the SSC, while Saint Leo drops to
14-6 overall and 6-3 in the SSC.
Sophomore Shannon McDonough led the Tars with 12 kills, followed
by Bri Civiero with nine. Sophomore Rebecca Wilson paced the team
in digs with 17 for the evening. She was followed by MaryEllen Pole
with 11. Pole also added 19 assists for a double-double, followed
by April Jackson with 11. McDonough and Kerra Tirado controlled the
net, each contributing three blocks.
Saint Leo was led by Jillian Stolzenberg with 11 kills, Anna
Siruckova and Britt Sederholm each had eight kills for the evening.
Leading the team in both assists and digs was Ashlee Hodgskin with
29 and 16, respectively. Katie Adamson led Saint Leo in blocks with
four.
The first set had eight ties and five lead changes, but Rollins
took the lead at 13-12 with a kill by Shannon McDonough. The Tars
maintained that lead for the rest of the set in a 25-18 victory
over the Lions, holding Saint Leo to a .194 hitting percentage.
Set two was also a back and forth battle between the Tars and
the Lions with eight ties and five lead changes. Rollins led by as
many as five at 17-12, but Saint Leo pulled within one point of
Rollins at 22-21. However, The Tars were able to secure set two in
a 25-22 decision with a kill from McDonough, leading the Lions 2-0
going into the third set.
Saint Leo was ahead for most of the third set, until a kill by
Civiero pushed the Tars out to a 15-14 lead. The Lions were able to
tie the score back up at 15-15, but never regained the lead for the
rest of the set, allowing Rollins to secure the 3-0 victory with a
25-23 decision in the third set.
The Tars return to action on Saturday, October 24 when they host
Eckerd College as part of their Dig Pink rally event. Match time is
slated for 4 p.m. Fans who are unable to make it to the game will
