CARROLLTON, Ga. (October 17, 2015) - Carrying
over momentum from Friday afternoon, the Rollins volleyball team
opened day two of the 2015 South Region Crossover with a 3-0 sweep
(25-22, 25-21, 25-18) over Christian Brothers University on
Saturday morning at the Coliseum on the campus of University of
West Georgia. The Tars claim their second straight sweep and
advance to a record of 4-13 while the Lady Bucs drop to a mark of
6-14 on the year.
Leading the way for the Tars was sophomore Channon McDonough,
who tallied 13 kills on the morning, followed closely by Rachel
Sawyer with 12. Bri Civiero earned nine digs while MaryBethany
Vincent and Kianna Dieudonné posted five and four kills,
respectively.
R. Sawyer notched a double-double adding 14 digs to her kill
tally, while Rebecca Wilson led the squad with 16 digs.
Defensively, Dieudonné shut down the Lady Bucs with a match
high five blocks, while Kerra Tirado and McDonough followed with
three apiece. Seniors MaryEllen Pole and April Jackson tallied 20
and 16 assists, respectively.
Christian Brothers was led by Alexis Gillis with 11 kills, while
Jessica Reber dished out the assists with a match best 27. Three
Lady Bucs earned double-digit dig counts, with Blythe Clausen
leading the way with 14, while Gillis and Alexa Henderson each
brought in 10. Brinsley Cooper led the charge at the net with four
blocks.
Set one saw a total the score tied on 12 occasions, including
late in the set with the scoreboard set at 19-19. The Tars earned
two straight points to pull ahead 21-19, but a kill by Cooper
brought CBU back to within one, 21-20. A kill by Tirado followed
by a block by Dieudonné and McDonough pulled the Tars out to
a 23-20 advantage, but the Lady Bucs answered back with two points
of their own to pull back to within one, 23-22. An attack error by
Gillis set the Tars up for set point, and Dieudonné hammered
home the set one win with a kill off of an assist from Jackson.
Rollins pulled out to a 3-0 lead in set two, and never looked
back as they took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-21 set two victory.
Christian Brothers led by as much as three in the third with a
score of 7-4, but the Tars battled back to tie it up at 9-9. After
a quick back-and-forth, the Tars earned three straight to pull
ahead 13-10 and closed out the match with a 25-18 victory in set
three to earn the sweep.
The Tars return to action this afternoon when they square up
against the University of West Georgia to close out the 2015 South
Region Crossover. Match time against the Wolves is slated for 2:30
