CALIFORNIA,Pa. (September 12, 2014) - The
Rollins Volleyball team (5-1) defeated California (Pa.), 3-2 and
defeated Alderson Broaddus 3-0 in their first two matches at the
Vulcan Invitational.
The Tars came back from down two sets to beat California (Pa.)
16-25, 25-27, 25-15, 25-20, 15-9. In their first match, Rollins
defeated Alderson Broaddus with set scores of 25-22, 25-18 and
25-20.
Rollins registered 99 digs as a team in their match against
California (Pa.) as senior libero Collyn
Welsch added a team-high 31 digs while holding California (Pa.)
to a .074 hitting percentage. Welsch also added 22 digs in the Tars
first match and held Alderson to a team .040 hitting
percentage.
Senior middle blocker Jessica
Wilson led the Tars with 15 kills and a .250 hitting percentage
against California (Pa.). Shannon
McDonough added 13 kills and 13 digs against the Vulcans, while
Kate
Stefanski contributed 12 kills and three digs.
Rollins hitting percentage climbed each set, from -.059 in the
first set to .333 in the fifth set. The Tars hit .120 as a team,
with MaryEllen Pole contributing 25 assists and April Jackson
having 19 assists in the match.
Down two sets to none the match turned around, at 3-4, as a kill
by McDonough gave Rollins the lead for good and Rollins won the
third set 25-15.
In the fourth set, two kills by Jessica Wilson at 8-9 gave the
Tars the lead as they pushed through to win the set 25-20.
Heading into the fifth set, at 6-6, a kill by McDonough with an
assist to Pole gave the Tars the lead. Four straight points by
Sawyer, Stefanski and Welsch allowed Rollins to win the set
15-9.
In their first match of the Vulcan Invitational the Tars
defeated Alderson Broaddus, 3-0.
Katlyn
Sawyer led the Tars with 11 kills including a .346 attack
percentage while the team averaged a .229 hitting percentage.
Senior libero Collyn Welsch had 22 digs and a total of 54 digs in
both matches.
McDonough added nine kills and averaged a .238 hitting
percentage. Junior setter MaryEllen Pole led the Tars with 15
assists and junior setter April
Jackson chipped in with 14 assists.
Wilson tallied six kills and 10 blocks, while Stefanski added
seven kills and five blocks to help the Tars to a three-set
victory.
The Tars were down early in the first set, but came back to win
the first set 25-22 with a .261 hitting percentage.
In the second set, a kill by Sawyer gave the Tars the lead as
they held on for a 25-18 win. Rollins hit .220 while holding
Alderson to a .071 hitting percentage.
Rollins did not let up in the third set after a kill at 8-all by
Wilson as the Tars held Alderson Broaddus to a -.125 hitting
percentage in the third set to win 25-20.
