LAKELAND, Fla. (April 11, 2014) The Rollins College softball team trounced Florida Southern 8-1 in an SSC matchup Friday night at Barnett Field. Hilary Brown led the Tars at the plate with a two-run double in the first and a two-run single in the second inning.

Rollins improves to 31-10 (14-5 SSC) after the result while the Mocs fall to 21-15 (7-9 SSC)

Niki Fogle (W, 20-5) picked up her SSC-leading 20th victory by holding the SSC's second best hitting team to one run and a pair of hits. The sophomore threw 75 pitches, 57 for strikes, and struck out a trio of Mocs in six innings of work. Freshman Hillary Hon made her collegiate and Rollins debut in relief, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.

The Tars built a 5-0 first inning lead by batting through the order. After three of the first four Rollins batters of the game walked to load the bases, Brown gave the Tars a 2-0 lead with a double down the left field line. Chelsea Reed followed with a triple to right center on the next pitch that scored two more runs. The fifth run of the inning scored on an error.

Another walk to Hailee Keisling started the second inning, and after back-to-back 1-out singles by Kristie Hoeffer and Veronica Alred, Brown drove in her third and fourth RBIs on the day with a single. Brittany Johnson's sacrifice fly put the Tars up 8-0.

The Mocs got a run back in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly but the Tars lead was too much to overcome as the game ended with an 8-1 final score.

Rollins came into the game hitting .314 as a team, and were one of only two teams in the SSC averaging more than eight hits per game. Florida Southern was the other one, yet they combined for only eight between them Friday night.

Florida Southern and Rollins will play again on Saturday with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 p.m.
