WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 14, 2014) - The
Rollins College softball team downed Eckerd 4-0 on Friday night in
the first game of the weekend SSC showdown series. Niki
Fogle (W, 12-3) had a strong showing in the circle, tossing a
seven-inning one-hit shutout.
Rollins improve to 19-8 (4-3 SSC) on the season, while the
Tritons drop to 13-11 (4-3 SSC).
The game was scoreless until the Tars broke it open in the
fifth. Sophomore Jule
Kranz led off the inning and moved over to second on Hilary
Brown's sacrifice bunt. Shortstop Jessica
Gipson followed with an RBI single up the middle. The Triton
first baseman cut off the throw to the plate to tried to keep
Gipson from advancing to second but errantly threw the ball to the
right center field fence, allowing the senior to advance two bases
and score the second run of the inning.
The Tars rally continued with the top two spots in the order.
First baseman Hailee
Keisling singled and Courtney
Durbin doubled to left center, giving Rollins two runners in
scoring position. Kristie
Hoeffer recorded her 31st RBI on the year and
advanced Durbin to third with a groundout to Eckerd's first
baseman. The sophomore left fielder scored the fourth and final
Rollins run of the game on Eckerd's Erin Dixson's wild pitch.
Fogle didn't walk a Triton and fanned eight in the victory,
bumping her season total to a conference-best 100 batters struck
out.
The seven inning contest only lasted an hour and two
minutes.
Rollins will be back in action tomorrow to continue the Sunshine
State series in doubleheader fashion. First pitch is scheduled for
1 p.m. and the second contest will follow thirty minutes after the
completion of the first.
