WINTER PARK, Fla. (March 11, 2014) - Mike
Gaughan tossed 5.1 innings of three-hit baseball as he helped
lead the Tars to a 9-0 shutout victory over the Stonehill Skyhawks
Tuesday night.
The freshman picked up his second win of the season as he
recorded a season-best six strikeouts. He allowed the Skyhawks'
only three hits and gave up one walk.
Gaughan was once again backed up with a strong offense as the
team registered 11 hits. Lucas
Valelly led the team with three hits, while Brett
Flutie, Yuta
Okazaki and Evan
Rivera each had two.
In the first three frames, Rollins scored sparingly as they
plated one run in each of the three innings. Valelly scored the
Tars' first run of the game. He reached on an infield single,
stole second, was awarded third on a balk and scored on a wild
pitch.
In the second inning, Tyler
Fairbanks was the first Tar to reach base as he made his way on
a hit-by-pitch. Fairbanks then stole second and took third on a
grounder. He then crossed the plate on an Evan
Rivera two-out single.
Redshirt junior Brett
Flutie scored the Tars' third run after starting off the inning
with a double. A wild pitch allowed Flutie to advance to third and
would then be driven in by Valelly on a ball laced through the left
side.
Two quiet innings would go by before the Tars' four-run sixth
would push their lead to 7-2. Another two runs in the seventh
would be all that the Tars would score for the night.
Stonehill starting pitcher was tagged with the loss in 5.0
innings of work. Nicholson allowed three runs on six hits, but
struck out five.
Rollins will face St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday, March 12 at 6
p.m. before returning to Sunshine State Conference play on Friday
as they host No. 1 Tampa.
